Help please

Post by crystal90610 » Sun Mar 18, 2007 2:20 pm

I have just downloaded a Statutory Marriage image from Scotlands People which has proved to be most useful. In the section for Name,Surname, Rank or Profession of Father and Name & Maiden Name of Mother, if one (or both) parent were deceased at the time of marriage, would the word "deceased" appear on the record ?

Hit a brick wall with the Scottish 1901 cenus and wonder if you have any ideas or suggestions as to why I can find no census records (after 1891 English census) for my Wynn ancestors Briefly, my ancesters were all involved in the theatre either as actors, comedians etc. I do know they spent time in Scotland and as there are no English Census records for them for 1901 I assumed they must be in Scotland at that time. Found the two eldest children (ages 26 and 20) living at the same address in Lanarkshire but can find nothing for the other family members. My grandfather would have been around 11 years old in 1901, one of his sisters around 14 and a younger brother, possibly around 6 or 7.

Any suggestions would be very welcome. Thank you for reading this

It should be the case that "(deceased)" appears, much more reliably so than on English certs, but errors on Scottish register entries are not unknown.

Two suggestions off the top of my head, - (a) have you tried spelling variations?, - there's a couple of WYNs, and 54 WINs or WINNs, - and (b) have you considered Ireland ?

Hello Crystal,
Welcome to Talking Scot! :D What are the names of the ancestors you are looking for? If you post a little more information, perhaps someone on the forum can find your wandering relatives...
All the best,
Sarah

The Elusive Wynn Family

Post by crystal90610 » Sun Apr 01, 2007 10:42 pm

Hi Sarah,

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my message. I will now post more information about the family but I doubt anyone will be able to find the "Wandering Wynns" as they seem to have vanished from the face of the earth after the 1891 English Census.

Henry Smith Wynn (Smith was the middle christian name) born in Berwick on Tweed (c) 1814. He was a comedian/actor. Found no record of him after 1881 English Census. Thought he may have returned to Scotland but have found no census or death records on Scotlands People.

Henry Smith Wynn (son) born (c) 1847 in Middlesborough. Married to Eliza Finch (or Fincham?) who was born (c) 1851 in Yorkshire. Both were actors. Once again no records found after 1891 English Census.

Children of Henry & Eliza .......

Amy Elizabeth Wynn born (c) 1872 in Goole, Yorkshire

Henry (Harry) born (c) 1874 in Dunfermline, Scotland. Found him on 1901 Scottish Census.

Clara Leslie Wynn born (c) 1880 in Leslie, Scotland. Found her on 1901 Scottish Census - living in same house as her brother Henry. She later married a Samuel Greensmith in Scotland 1902.

Annie Wynn born (c) 1887 in Lancashire. No records after 1891 English Census.

Harold Wynn born (c) 1889 in Lancashire. No records after 1891 English Census.

Harold was my grandfather and I do remember him telling me he once lived in Scotland. I assumed the whole family were in Scotland at the time of the 1901 census and thought perhaps my great grandparents and great, great grandfather may have died there. No luck so far.

I have tried different spelling variations but so far have drawn a blank.

It would be wonderful if someone knew anything about my elusive ancestors.

Thank You

Crystal,

Have you considered that they may have emigrated, that is where some of mine have gone.
Some to Canada and some to Australia and New Zealand

Got three of them (and one extra)!! :D Indexed as Sroynn  But when you see the original, you can't fault the indexer. Definitely looks like it starts with an 'S'.

1901
3 Cambridge Court, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire
Henry Wynn, head, 49, Comedian, born Yorks, Middlesboro
Eliza, wife, 44, born Yorks, Leeds
Harold, son, 11, born Lancs, Ramsbottom
George, son, 9, born Worcester, Bromsgrove

Did you know about George?

Did the David W. Wynn age 12 on the 1891 census not survive? Or did you just accidentally leave him out of your list?

All the best,
Sarah
