Innes/Grant family connection

Post by jude1963 » Fri Mar 30, 2007 3:19 am

Hi fellow researchers, I am looking for information re the Innes and Grant families. My great great grandfather William Innes was born in Elgin and his mother (Elizabeth Grant) was supposably the eldest daughter of the Grants who owned the whiskey distillery in Elgin. I have looked at marriages around this time and the only likely one looks like it occurred in 1846 in Inveravon, but the wife's name was Helen Grant. This couple had 3 children including a William born in 1848. The place of birth looks very much like "Eastertown" but I am not very good with deciphering the scottish handwriting.

William Innes went to Manchester when 19 years of age and married Elizabeth Stokes. My grandmother descends from this family.

If anyone has any information about this family I would be most grateful if you could get in touch and I can share what I have.

Hi Judith,

Could you give us William's father's name as well please?

If you are having trouble with the certificate, why don't you upoad it to the gallery "certificates - help with deciphering" and we might be able to help out there.

Sorry I can't help with the Innes/Grant family but here is William Grant in 1881. This is the man who founded and built the first Grant distillery.

William Grant, founder of the distillery in Dufftown was born in Dufftown in 1839. His parents were William Grant and Elizabeth Reid. He married Elizabeth Duncan in Dufftown when he was 20. Their eldest daughter, Elizabeth was born 17/1/1862 and died 24/8/1862.

It is possibly the Glen Grant distillery founded by John Grant in 1840 in Rothes, 10 miles from Elgin that you are looking for.
