Newbie looking for help

Post by LynneAA » Sun Apr 15, 2007 8:45 pm

Hi, I'm just starting out researching my family tree. Both my parents are dead and I'm stuck at the first hurdle.

Both my mum and dad had a sister who died in infancy, although I'm not sure of their exact ages when they died. I've searched the death records up to 1956 but cannot find any record. Can anyone tell me if all baby deaths should be in these SRs? I dont think they were stillborn. Or can anyone give me a bit of a clue where else to look? I went into my local registrars (Paisley) but they said they didnt keep records. Is this right?

Thanking you for any information you can provide.

Lynne

Hi Lynne,

A warm welcome to Talking Scot.

Any deaths after 1855 in Scotland were registered and should be available on SP up to and including 1956. Are you making use of the wildcards in your search?

For instance, any names starting with Mac or Mc should be entered starting with M*c. Any names that are sometimes spelled with an "e" at the end, pop a * at the end, just in case the registrar added one or left it out. Names like Miller could have been entered as Millar instead.

Remember, the informant would probably have been under some stress at the time amd may not have been too vigilant about making sure names were entered with the correct spelling.

Hi Lynne
...and a warm welcome to talking Scot. :D

If you know when your parents married, that might be the best starting point. If it was before 1931, and took place in Scotland it will be available on line. Another way to approach it would be to find their death certificates - you may find a member of the family has these, but if not, if the death occurred before 1956 you can find them online at ScotlandsPeople (see link at top of page), a pay per view site (with 20 free credits available just now. See http://www.sundaymail.co.uk/news/feed/t ... _page.html
for details and password) This might get you started. Also, a look for your parents' births might give you the area their families lived in, and so maybe the area for the deaths of the siblings.

However, if both of the above cut off dates are too early, you may need to pay a visit to Edinburgh, ask a friend or researcher to do it for you (just to get you started) or contact GROS directly yourself. See:

Best wishes
