Help deciphering "Profession" on MC please.

Post by Lorna Allison » Tue May 22, 2007 12:54 am

I wonder if someone would be good enough to look at the "Profession" section of this MC in the Gallery (James Tait), and let me know if they can help elucidate. I think it is "Joiner, ??? (Gunner?), RFA - whatever that means.

This chaps two older brothers had sons who were killed in WWI and he and his brother William (witness on this cert) are the only relatives I know of, of my gfather, in Scotland , who may have had children. This James' death cert was signed by his son James and, so frustratingly, James was actually living in Tollcross, Glasgow when my family were in Glasgow too. Never heard of them of course

I don't know where William lived or what family they both had (other than son James) but wondered if the "RFA" might relate to something that would help in the search, like a firm or something. Tenuous, I know. While he was working as a Joiner in Springburn when he got married, on his death cert. he was a "Driver -Quarryman".

Any help appreciated.

Hi Lorna,

I agree with your definition - Joiner, Gunner RFA. RFA could be Royal Field Artillery or Royal Fleet Auxiliary. The Royal Field Artillery looks to be more likely.

All the best,

I agree with both of you, although I didn't know what RFA meant.

Thanks very much Andrew and Anne. I had dismissed "Gunner" as being a ridiculous thought  Cor, that branch of the Taits certainly did their bit in the First World War.

I haven't ever looked up army records before but had a quick look at the NA site and couldn't see how to get started. Dare I ask for a clue :?:

Thanks again

Lorna
