Post by puffin » Thu Jun 07, 2007 10:18 am

On the death of John Davidson on 1st January 1951 in Chapel of Gairoch his daughter ( Helen ) is the witness, in her married name which I cannot read.

It looks as though it begins with a C...... but I am not confident with the rest.

Can anyone help please

Thanks

Hi Puffin,

Not a clue. I'd have been struggling to see the first name Helen there if you had not given that.

It may be worth filling in a contact form on ScotlandsPeople saying that the signature is not legible. That will probably result in GROS sending you a photocopy of the certificate from the original book rather than the monochrome digital image that is available online. Parts of the signature that are made up of fine lines which are lost by the resolution of the digitising process may be visible in the photocopy and reveal the name to you.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hello Puffin,

Andrew's advice is definitely the way to go, but I just thought that suggesting Coutts might give some ideas.

Hi Sporran,

I had also wondered about it being Coutts but have not been able to find any marriage between Helen Davidson and ? Coutts (at least in scotland), so the jury is still out on that.

Using wildcards on scotlandspeople with c****s brings up two possibilities but then these do not, to my mind, fit the signature itself. I may be wrong on that but will be patient to see what ScotlandsPeople now send me.

I will post the answer here when it is received.

Thanks

Puffin

I think it is Coutts.

There is a John Beattie Coutts married to Nellie Davidson in 1913 in Inverurie that might fit.

I definitely read the first name as Helen. The surname is as easily Smith or Beattie as Coutts, as it is so indistinct. SP will replace with a photoprint which is much more legible. Have you checked the IGI?
Not much help, I'm afraid.

Hi Frances

I agree the name on the death cert if definitely Helen but Nellie is a common variant of Helen which is why I suggested this marriage as a possible.
