Kinlochspelvie marriages

Post by Russell » Fri Jun 08, 2007 11:09 pm

We were looking tonight, for the marriage of Donald McLaine to Catherine Livingston on 25th January 1856.

We found the certificate but were quite startled to see his parents
Father - John McLaine
Mother - Catherine Livingston

and her parents

Father - Niel Livingston
Mother - Mary McLean

Witnesses
Donald Livingston
and
Donald Livingston

We wondered if they spelled the surname McLean differently just so cousins didn't marry  :?:

It may not be direct family line - but - This lot deserve further investigation :?

Hi Russell,

The IGI is of limited help for these families as almost all of the entries there are LDS submissions, so the spelling may have been chosen by the submitter.

DONALD MC LAINE - Christening: 23 MAR 1817 Torosay, Argyll (LDS submission)
MARGARET MC LAINE - Christening: 25 APR 1819 Torosay, Argyll (LDS submission)
JEAN MCLAINE - Christening: 10 MAY 1821 Torosay, Argyll (LDS submission)
JEAN MCLAINE - Christening: 20 MAY 1821 Torosay, Argyll (OPR extract)
CHARLES MC LAINE - Christening: 06 JUL 1823 Torosay, Argyll (LDS submission)
HECTOR MC LAINE - Christening: 07 AUG 1825 Torosay, Argyll (LDS submission)

Father: Neil Livingston, Mother: Mary McLaine
CATHERINE LIVINGSTON - Christening: 14 FEB 1822 Torosay, Argyll (LDS submission)
JANET LIVINGSTON - Christening: 01 NOV 1823 Torosay, Argyll (LDS submission)
DUNCAN LIVINGSTON - Christening: 03 OCT 1825 Torosay, Argyll (LDS submission)
DONALD LIVINGSTON - Christening: 01 JAN 1828 Torosay, Argyll (LDS submission)

Hi Andrew

This was the Statutory entry of the marriage and we found that there were two family groups in Kinlochspelvie who used different spellings of the family name. The same applied to the Livingston(e) clan.
They all lived within a few miles of each other and some of the OPR entries for Births and Marriages are just as consistent in the spelling.
The gene pool in the area must have been quite small and they did not move around much so perhaps it was a simple method of differentiating between family lines.
A quick trawl through FreeCen looking at their neighbours turned up umpteen families who must be related with quite young children with different surnames obviously farmed out to their aunties, grand-parents, cousins, but almost impossible to sort out without doing a regional study.

Ho Hum Guess what we'll be doing for the next few nights :D

Hi Russell,

The second Statutory Account of Scotland for Torosay Parish (which included the quoad sacra parish of Kinlochspelvie, from its having been raised in 1828) gives some explanation of the McLaine spelling variation of the name McLean, and the origins of the McLean name in the parish.

Having lived on Mull for nearly 7 years there are variety of ways of spelling both names.

In short MacLean are followers of the MacLeans of Duart and MacLaine are followers of MacLaine of Lochbuie.

They are both related through a ancestor who split his land between two sons and one changes his name to MacLaine to differentiate himself and his followers.

Livingston(e) would IMO be just down to spelling in the registers.

If you come across MacLachlans, MacKinnons , Buchanans in Kinlochspelvie your more than liable be related to me as mine all live next door in Torosay Parish
Lang/loynachan/oloynachan/Gillies/Scally/McIlchere- Argyll, Denovan/Rollo, Stirling/Burns-Stirling Mackie/Grant/Ingils/Campbell-Aberdeen,Stewart/Bell-Glasgow
