Help in deciphering a DC, please...

Post by Anne H » Sun Jun 24, 2007 11:28 pm

I’ve just uploaded a DC for Margaret Russell Munn for approval. Can anyone make out what it says in between the time of death and Bridge of Weir (Kilbarchan) :?:

Thanks for any help!

Hi Anne,

I will go for Mistylaw, Bridge of Weir (Kilbarchan)
Usual Residence 94-4 New City Road, Glasgow.

Google gives a number of hits for Mistylaw and Misty Law, Bridge of Weir.

All the best,

AndrewP

Thanks Andrew. I knew it ended in "law" but thought the first letter was "B". Now that you've pointed it out, I can see Mistylaw. I wonder if that was the name of a farm (or institution) she was visiting or if it's in reference to the Misty Law Hills.

The usual address is actually 944 New City Road (although it looks like 94-4)...they lived there for several years.

Thanks again.

Regards,
Anne H

Hi Anne

There is no farm by that name in Bridge of Weir. There is a small hill just to the north of the village called Law hill.
The old village of Bridge of Weir was/is in a valley but when the railway arrived in the village in 1864 rich folk from Glasgow could commute and they built big houses on the hill facing across to the Law hill. Most of these houses were known only by name and Mrs Fraser was probably visiting a friend in the village at the time.

Hi Russell,

That’s a nice bit of additional information…many thanks. I’m not sure how rich they were, but they did have money handed down from early on through at least the 1940’s so it’s very possible Mrs. Fraser was visiting at the time.

Hi Anne

I would have thought that a textile designer would have a bit of money and appropriately wealthy friends.
Bridge of Weir started out as a small weaving village, part of Kilbarchan parish and only sprouted into a town in its own right quite late on.
The moderately rich moved in while the seriously rich travelled further along the railway to the next village, Kilmacolm, which mushroomed with mansions.
Bridge of Weir lost out in the weaving business before the railway arrived so they started leather tanning and there were several tanneries. There is only one left but it produces some beautiful leather for expensive car seats.

Hi Russell,

I love these gems of information, they add so much more to the picture...many thanks.

You know, I never even gave a thought to Mr. Fraser having money, I've been so busy tracking down the Russell's & Munns. No doubt you're right though about him having money too, but sadly, I haven't yet been able to come up with much on him other than the usual records...not even a telephone number for him in any of the directories on Ancestry  I'm sure he probably left a Will but unfortunately he didn't die until 1916 so it looks like I'll have to wait a while to see that.

Regards,
Anne H

Hello Ann
I had a look at the DC and was surprised to see one of my Greats also on there, Margaret Walker nee Shedden orig from Beith, I know she had been staying with her 1st son Alexander Paterson in New Cumnock, but as her son-in-law was the informant I can only think that she was either visiting or staying with them at Bridge of Weir.
I am trying to make out the word next to Mount Pleasant on her DC could it be Houston? any suggestions anyone.
Thanks Ann
Regards Rita.

Hi Rita

If only more like that would pop up and save the SP credits :D

Yes, I think you are right. It certainly looks like Houston to me and the closely related villages of Houston and Crosslee are not far from Bridge of Weir.
I can't see a Mount Pleasant on a modern map but it was probably one of the houses in the village. There are only two farms between Bridge of Weir and Houston so it was neither of them. perhaps the early Orinance Survey map might give a clue.
