Hi everybody,
I am a Newbie on the block! so not sure what i am doing. I found the site while trawling the internet trying to make sense of my family tree. I live in Dubai at the moment (hubby is here for 2 years) and i have decided to try and spend time researching my name/names.
I was born in Dumbarton, Scotland then age 5 moved to Scotstoun, Glasgow
My father's name (and mine before marriage) is Beveridge. I have made good headway there going back to 1765. For more info i think i really have to head up to Dunfermline in Fife - that's another project. His mother's name is more tricky, before marriage she was Bridget Flannigan - and lots of irish names in there Devine, Gallagher. I am experiencing the same problems as lots of Glasgow/irish in that on the census it only states "Ireland" as place of birth - so disappointing as i do not know which part in Ireland to concentrate on. (Hopefully this site will help).
My Mother's name was Hardie and all her family came from Clydebank/
dalmuir area, i think when i start on that side i may have better luck.
Anyway enough droning on from me. Hello to everyone from me!
A newbie

Hi Crayspond, and Welcome to TalkingScot
I'm sure you'll find lots of help and clever suggestions to support your search from Dubai. You'll find some information in the Scots Abroad section - Ireland. As there was a session earlier this year dealing with the topic of seeking the Irish connections, you may hear what those good folk have put into practice.
All the best in your search, and again, Welcome!
Frances

Hi crayspond,
A warm welcome to Talking Scot
You'll find everyone on here well remembers what it was like to be a "newbie" and you'll get a lot of helpful advice.
I don't know if you have had a look at the Scotlands People site yet on http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ It is unbeatable for Scottish family research and you can actually view and download birth, marriage and death records as well as wills and testaments. It is a pay to view site, but the charges are very reasonable.
Unfortunately, Irish family research is a bit more difficult. I too have Irish ancestors and have more than a few brick walls on those lines
Any help you need, just ask. We all love a challenge

Hi crayspond
A warm welcome to Talking Scot from me too.
My ears pricked up, so to speak, when I read the name Beveridge and your plan for a trip to Dumfermline. Several of my Livingstons married Beveridges from Fordel in Fife, just along the road from Dumfermline. The name is certainly very common in that part of the world, but who knows, there might be a connection.
Best wishes
Catriona
