Hi Sylvia

I think it might say scarlet fever. I'm fairly sure the second word is fever but am not so sure about the first one.

Ah you may be right there, Muriel, now you point it out I can see "fever" too. And "scarlet" is a definate possiblity, well done, better eyes than me. I've been poring over it for days
Any idea what the rest of it says? Would it just be the Doctor who attended do you think?

Yes, I think you're right about the surgeon bit. The first word looks a bit like "Unfriendly"! The second one could be Campbell or Crawford. Not at all sure about the word after his name but I agree with the "declared her deceased".

Hehehe, hope he wasn't unfriendly.
I was think maybe Wilfred (not a very Scottish name methinks)
Best we're going to do I think, 2 heads are always better than one. :D
Thanks Muriel, off to bed now

Hi ladybird & Muriel
I think it looks like:

Scarlet Fever, 8 days
As certified by James Fisher?
[not sure about that surname at all... thought it was Gilchrist to begin with]
Surgeon [place name?] (without knowing the county or town/city/village or place of death it is difficult to hazard a guess at this one if it is a place name such as a hospital of similar. If she died in a hospital the place name may be repeated in column 2, whcih migth help if the writingis clearer even on just certian letters)
saw deceased on 25 (date could be as suggested Nov 1860, but does that make sense with date of death? What was it?)

Best wishes
Lesley

I'll suggest the place name is Falkirk (clue from burial in the Churchyard of Camelon, listed in the next column).

All the best,

Thanks folks
Lesley 25 Nov 1861 makes perfect sense, that's the day Jeannie died, also the name of the Doctor, I'd never have got that.

And thank you Andrew for the burial place...another bit I couldn't read. :D

You people are just amazing!!!!

Hi Ladybird
also the name of the Doctor
I'm far from sure on that name, pretty sure in ends in "er" but I have a sneaking suspicion there is one more letter in there than you find in Fisher..... not convinced about the "h" either - it could end "tner" it is still very much open to suggestions!!

Best wishes
