Re: Polish family from 1830s
I think you need to start at the beginning [or end] and work your way back from your friend to his Polish ancestor. Using marriages, birth & deaths with the help of census records can give a clearer picture. Doing that will give you a better timeline of where the family were at various points and wh...

Re: Frederick Asken
There could be children after 1874 when the online IGI births stop. All the best, AndrewP The 1881 census has Margaret [6], Edward[4] & Andrew [1], but no Thomas ASKIN. I'm not sure if we are following the correct family however, as Annette says the parents' names were George & Ann - not Frederick ...

Re: Frederick Asken
Goodness - the possibilities are endless! At what point did the surname become Erskine? in the censuses you have found where were they born? SP does have Ann's death in 1872 [Esken], marriage of Fred to Bridget Hannoway in 1863 and a baby born Fred in 1869.[Asken] but other than that I'm coming up w...

Re: Query on registration "district"
Sorry Billy, I perhaps didn't make that very clear. I was referring to the fact that for the last 10 years? or so, each child born in Scotland appears to have at least 2 entries in the SP Birth index. One under Mother's surname and another under the father's [ or if they are double barrelled, any am...

Re: Query on registration "district"
Adoption was a touchy subject in the past - always spoken of in hushed tones or whispered behind other children's backs, with some children only finding out, shockingly, as adults that they were an adoptee! especially those simply 'absorbed' into the wider family by childless aunts or brought up by ...

Re: Query on registration "district"
Now that is a total change in policy. Previously an adopted child's birth record was nowhere to be found - under either adopted or birth name. I had previously searched for births I knew to be adoptees and nothing would show. I'm not sure how I feel about this, given that even fairly young children'...

Re: What is this occupation?
In 1841 there's a George Paul in Old Macher aged 55 who is a BRICKMAKER ,
he has died in 1845 and his widow Isabella may be living with a son David, in Frederick St. Aberdeen .
but again I can't get that to fit!

Re: What is this occupation?
My first thought was a ladle maker , but not enough letters. Sailmaker is looking increasingly likely - despite the different versions of S on the same page, but Udny is inland so it would possibly be a more land based occupation. I had a look for George and David PAUL on the various censuses [ 1841...
