Oh how familiar it all sounds!!!!!
I found my gr-gr-grandfather had hung himself in the cellar of his house in 1903, next day a trip to the library found it in the local paper talked my OH to go passed the house (one of the few still standing)it was a butchers . He went no way are you going in to ask Can I see your cellar? I looked across the road & found my Aunts window,s look on to the butcher,s. Good job she never knew that. I pass the shop everytime I go to Kirkcaldy & found last week it closed . Christine

Oh I can relate to them all!
My niece gives me "the look" when I start quizzing people ie ones I meet at the bus-stop ,on the tube etc about their antecedents.

I did make a useful contact on the Tube Tracey.I was heading out to the FHC at Hyde Park when two big guys wearing medals started talking.
It was obvious they had served in Scottish Regiments.I struck up a conversation & it turned out they were employed at Edinburgh Castle at the War memorial there.I told them about all my Great-uncles who had served & died. They took details, gave me contact nos etc & a few weeks later they sent some memorobilla to me.

I too scan names, faces of the famous & am at the moment searching out a possible connection to Ricki Fulton -real name Robert KERR Fulton. It was a resemblance to my Grandpa noted whilst watching a rerun of Rab C that started that one off.My Mother was most insulted that A I was watching "such trash" B-Any inference that her handsome Father could in any way resemble Ricki Fulton.

I will go into any cemetery as I love them anyway but I will scan names just in case.

The ultimate though is when I am on the phone to the bank or anything & hear an accent I always ask "What;s your name & where do you come from"?

I like Alan's idea of a sanatorium for obsessed family historians.
It should be called "Never Dun looking"

Hi all,
I've just been on a "genealogy tour" in another part of the country (my husband is v-e-r-y tired of photographing tombstones  ). A week ago we went to a town where my ancestors had lived for several generations. While scanning the internet for a place to spend the night, I saw there was a B & B in my ancestor's house!!! So, no choice to stay anywhere but there.

When we arrived, who should come to the door but a man who looked JUST LIKE my second great grandfather  Turns out he is a descendant of the man who bought the house from my family in 1873. I showed them the picture of my gg grandfather (who died in 1872 in that house) and both he and his wife were amazed at the resemblance.

So of course, I spent the next day trying to find the link  Turns out this man is my 6th cousin once removed 8)... but related through the WIFE of the man in the picture #-o Hmmm. :-k

It means the house has stayed "in the family" for nearly 200 years, since in 1873, when he house was sold by my great grandfather to his great grandfather, it was sold to second cousins (once removed). They surely must have known that at the time.

Doesn't explain the resemblance, though... there must be another link :!: Guess what I'm doing now?

Sarah methinks you will not find the connection because I think there was some shennanigans going on back then.
OK I always always carry a disposable camera "just in case" I find.see something relevant.
I have stacks of them awaiting development-yes i know a digital would be better but what if it got lost/stolen/broken? A disposable is just that.
Oh & yes I always check to see what/where new posters are searching for.

It's funny though I found a connection through just trolling the internet one day.The other funny thing though was although we are connected it is not through the name I was looking for but through another very common surname.

I would agree  My ggg grandfather had 17 legitimate children... if he was equally prolific outside the home, I could spend years trying to get to the bottom of it!  (Sounds like fun   )
