Hi Ann:

I love the hat as well - very trendy with the feathers. Wonder what that would cost on today's market?

What about placing a piece of paper over the script and lightly scoring the paper over the script area with a light hand and a soft pencil? It was a trick employed in the movies when detectives wanted to know the last message written on the notepad, so they could follow their target. It's one idea we picked up on as kids, and it worked :) Sometimes!

Hi Marilyn,

Thank you, thats a great help.

Cathy, I think you may be right, I always did see things others couldn't, due to my imagination, but I just really wanted it to be writing
The hat is fantastic isnt it! Frances, I might just try the paper/pencil trick, you never know.
This was seemingly her Sunday clothes she had on, I am glad the ruffles around the neck are long gone, imagine a hot day in church with that on :!:

Thanks
Ann

Hello Annie
It's a good quality photo for the period. Is the image one that you have just scanned and submitted or was it edited before submission?
I have edited reducing fractions of your photo and If I can work out how to, will post the image for you.
In the meantime, the name looks like Ludy or maybe just Lady.
Above the name there is a letter "A" and below it a number which could be 268.
There are one or two people close to me who are much bettter with the finer points of Photoshop and I will ask one of them to take a look when I see them.
Hoping this helps
MM
PS. I can't believe a photographer would write "A Lady"when it is plain to see the subject's sex. Would they?

PPS. I have forgotten how to post an image. Will sometime please take me through it. Thanks

It's ok. I posted a couple of images simply by following the links. I assume the editor will know that the images belong to annie's photo post.

Hi Malcolm,

The photo was the original, scanned. It is the best one of all my old photographs, when I tip it to the side all the black areas shine, that was when I could see the writing, the more I looked at it the clearer the writing stood out, but I was begining to think it was just the fringing, its almost like it was written then wiped, causing a slight blurry look.

We wondered if she had been at a wedding, could that be the number of the photograph for ordering? The mat set on the stones looks like it had been an organised photo session. The writing of "Lady" does seem a bit strange.

Thank you for these images, I will go and have a good look at them now.

I’m afraid my Photoshop wizard wasn’t able to improve on the image forwarded earlier. I’m not sure whether or not he was just being lazy. He’s my son. There is more writing bottom centre but I can only make out a few numbers which probably won’t help you.
You were wondering about location. Me too. The quality building doesn’t appear to be a church from my calculation. The rounded stone mullion windows appear to incorporate sash openers not leaded stained glass. Assuming it to be some other establishment building I wondered whether it could be a hospital or college. The crushed stone pathway with the crude edging on which Margaret is seated , which is recent, isn’t typical of either of these as this would normally be stone flagged with a building of this standard. Could it be a former poorhouse which became an old people’s home at the time the photograph was taken?

Hi Malcolm,

Thank you for trying, you've been a great help as it is. I just presumed it was a church, now you have mentioned the windows and pathway its got me thinking, I hadn't really paid as much attention to the detail as I had to the writing. I wonder if it was the church manse, as a few of the children married there, or maybe it was an old peoples home, I will have a look around the area, as there were quite a few big houses around there, and see if I can spot something.

Thanks again for your help
