I am looking at the manifest page with all the passenger names on it, including James Stewart in row 6, with th enumbers you mention near where his occupation is, and I do not know what the numbers mean, although there seems to be some writing at the bottom of the page under these colums which suggests this is connected to these numbers somehow. Can't make out what it says. Maybe someone with more experience of ships manifests will be able to help.

...but I cannot see the bit you mention that says "Associated Passenger"- where are you seeing this bit?

Lesley - Associated Passenger is a column heading over the name of the person you search for. I take it to mean "passenger associated with your search criteria."

Oh duh.
Thanks Mary - No much wonder I could not see it on the manifest page!!

Yes, I agree Mary, I think it just means the record asscoatied with the passenger name you searched for.

Hi Jan:

I'm not sure what the reference number concerns, but other than a subsequent return date and record number, could it be the naturalisation or citizenship date.

In terms of the number - all of the like numbers on the page are six digits. James' has a 2 preceding his number 439528. Could he have married and returned making the subsequent record relevant to 2 people?

I couldn't find any reference to the meaning of the handwritten numbers, but perhaps you might want to contact the Ellis Island Foundation for clarification.

The handwriting across the bottom provides notes, dates and signatures of the inspectors regarding the manifest lists.

One identifies that Thomas Maguire listed on line 10 had missed the boat, therefore they had 'short shipped' and there were only 29 passengers rather than the 30 listed.

The other says that persons on line 1 and 21 had not been released by immigration, but rather had been hospitalised.

On line 6, James himself is noted as having chronic conjunctivitis, but was showing no signs when he landed.
