Hi Helen,

If you head over to Clarkston you'll get a nice wee surprise!

I headed down to Airdrie this morning and there's a stone to this family. Not much left of the inscription but enough to identify the George you mentioned - died May 1887 aged 51 years. You can just make out the name Gillespie too but in general, it's quite badly eroded.

I took some photos, so if you want copies, send me your address by PM. You'll obviously want to go yourself, but knowing what the stone looks like would help you find it.

I discovered (I think), that Division 9 means Row 9. Division 1 is Row 1 and starts at the wall on the far left as you enter the Churchyard, so your stone is 9 Rows from that wall.

Nice find Anne,

Helen, according to SP there was only one Walter Simpson death in Scotland in 1873 and that was a 62 year old in Lanarkshire although it doesn’t appear to be registered in the District of Airdrie. The fellow in the newspaper who was smoking his pipe would have to be the same. If you can’t access the article and want a copy just send me an email address via a PM and I’ll send you one.

All the best,
Alan

Anne and Allan you have both been brilliant, I have at last been able to fill in a lot of gaps and even found out who the Alexander was on the gravestone, he was the son of Robert Simpson and Helen Cowie, Walters Grandson and Illigitmate son of his daughter jean. If there is ever anything I can do for you both, please ask. I live in Fife
