The Welsh census is probably the correct people as it could be taken as Sagar but also, to me looks like Logan.

Susan,

Just for my benefit can you please explain how you found Mary and James in Wales as I don't understand how you did it. You didn't know their surname had been transcribed as Sagar and any search for James and Mary would have found thousands of possibilities.

My address, if you prefer to tell me off list is:

Thanks again

Hi Dave

I searched for James born 1893 in Ayr - as simple as that.

I used 1893 not 1892 as most people have not had their birthday before the census in any given year - so it's often best to knock off a year, unless you know the birthday is prior to the census date.

Sometimes on Ancestry names are transcribed as something you could never imagine it to be so it's best to search using only given name if all else is failing to come up with expected answers. Also there was a possibility Mary had remarried and James may have been under a name which we had no way of knowing, so again the first name search only may help.

Yes, you can get a very very long list of possibles, but I always find that if I've searched every other angle and have resorted to a first name only search it really is worth persevering and going through the whole list.

When you get up the list of possibles, look at each entry on the list, is the name similar ? Or look at the shape of the letters in the name - do they match the shape of the letters in the name you are looking for ? Tall letters, small letters, letters which go below the line etc For example Logan and Sagar - very similar pattern - L and S very often swapped in transcription. Lowercase vowels - very often swapped, and lowercase n and r also swapped very often in transcriptios.

Pause over each entry and look at the quick view it brings up. From that you can see the relationship to head of house, mother/father's name, others in the household. This can give you an idea as to whether anyone else you were expecting to find is also listed - or you may recognise others in the household etc.

Anyhow I reckoned that a James aged 8 born Ayr, with a Mary age 30 born Glasgow with the name Sagar a good possibility as the name Sagar has the same shape as the name Logan. I took a look at the actual census page and certainly it could easily be Logan. Given the fact that there are not really any other possibles jumping out it's a good chance it's who you are looking for.

Like you say the next step would be to try and find out about the people they were staying with. See what the connection was.

Susan.
