- I take it you are also aware that there is much in the way of WW1 soldiers records, images of the originals, on Ancestry? ( www.ancestry.co.uk )
This may give you some detail on individual soldiers (Officers are not incl. in the Service Records which tend to give the most detail - there is no online source for those at present):

British Army WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards, 1914-1920

British Army WWI Service Records, 1914-1920 (up to letter N so far, but some later letters are there due to misfiling of the orignals)

This database contains the surviving service records of non-commissioned officers and other ranks who served in WWI and did not re-enlist in the Army prior to World War II. With the latest release, this database now contains records for surnames beginning A-N. The type of information contained in these records includes: name of solider, age, birthplace, occupation, marital status, and regiment number.

British Army WWI Pension Records 1914-1920

This database contains service records of non-commissioned officers and other ranks who were discharged from the Army and claimed disability pensions for service in WWI. These were also men who did not re-enlist in the Army prior to World War II. The type of information contained in these records includes: name of solider, age, birthplace, occupation, marital status, and regiment number.

You can of course take out a subscription to Ancestry, but as your local library most likely offers free access to Ancestry, that would be the most sensible way to go I reckon!

I am aware that there is much in the way of WW1 soldiers records, images of the originals, on Ancestry. It is useful for filling in gaps on CWGC. Officers are a problem in terms of place of birth. British Army WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards are sparse in detail, sometimes have a next of kin name and address, but that may not be where the officer was born.

I have accessed Service Records and Pension Records but, as you know, a great deal of damage was done to these by a WW2 bomb.

Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914-1919 is OK but hardly ever gives the soldier's age

I have taken out a subscription to Ancestry as the time pressure in this project means I need to get answers as quickly as possible while I'm on the page, as it were. If I have to go back and add or delete it means the following layout has to be altered.

I have had to use Scotland's People when everything else has failed but, as you know, it costs money - and as it is mine I try to avoid that! Today I saw what I felt sure were a father and son Argylls and only getting the son's birth certificate proved that I was correct.
