 Hugo!

I am investigating such an error right now (see my new post at Statutory Records). I discovered I can't PROVE the parentage of my gggg grandfather. If his parents aren't who I have listed, there will be a whole lot of trimming to be done, as I have gone up and down side branches.

I have found a man and wife of the same surname and forenames on the 1841 census. If those two are mine, it means that my gggg grandfather didn't die in 1862 with the parents I have listed, which I received from a distant cousin who, when questioned much later, couldn't recall how she arrived at them! All it will take is finding out census man's wife's surname...if it is McCouat (var.) then I am sunk and will have to delete a lot! :?

Still, the research was a lot of fun. And I will have a ready made, well researched tree for someone else one day! :P

Like a lot of people already. When I first started this addiction, I was a bit remiss in putting down my sources of information.
I use Legacy and I doubt I will be able to catch up on filling in the sources.
Just recently I realised I had the wrong mother down for my 2 ggrandmother Isabella Matheison, If only I had looked at the censuses earlier I would have realised she wasnt born where I thought
 Fortunately when I sort this out :?: I will only have to delete a few dozen  well not that many I hope.
Wish I had thought of putting down sources when I started this game

What you need is 2 weeks holiday somewhere you can take your laptop but have no internet access. That and a bit more discipline than I have and also no visit from the 2 year old step grandson!!

Having said that I did make some progress on entering some data which should have been entered a loooooong time ago. I was so precious about what I'd managed to do that I backed it up to 2 separate flash drives, stored in 2 separate places. My husband thought that I'd really lost it this time. (Actually he'd thought that for years!!).

I was deeply embarrassed when I dropped in to the Islay FHS on spec and they found my great great grandmother's parents in the 1841 along with a child I had not known existed. It also gave me a good idea of where gggm was born and I had a look at the Farm as I passed. I had thought I'd found out everything I could about her. Pity we don't have a smiley for eating humble pie.

On husband's side I've also found 2 books (nothing to do with Islay all his bods are in Englandshire) which refer to an ancestor of his as being born in 1702 and living till 1770 odd, when I think he died in 1743. I think they are conflating father and son who had the same name and occupation but I'm beginning to doubt myself more than ever. It's not helped by grandfather having the same name and dying in 1743 too. Am I confused or what??? Help! I'm not infallible!!!

BTW If we're looking for a venue for a 'Beach Party' next year my nomination is Machir Bay on Islay. Truly lovely and very quiet.
