This is a good thread with a lot of good tips for everyone. One thing to bear in mind where names of witnesses on OPR baptisms are concerned, though they may well be related it could actually be anyone in the congregation.

In the early stages of my research, especially when there was only a couple of baptisms on the page, I thought the witnesses were relatives but the more OPR records I pulled I soon realized that they were actually elders of the church...the clue came when I saw the same names appearing time and time again in the witness column for most of the children being baptized.

Regards,
Anne H

I think the first Jean has died as the 2nd Jean's birth 10/1/1842 fits in with her in 1851 age 9.
Ann b.4/1/1840 is on the 1851 census age 11 and the 1861 age 22 - no sign of the other Ann born4/1/1845 (but notice it's the same birthday but a different year so could be an error in transcription).
John b.9/3/1844 is on the 1851 census age 6 and the 1861 age 16.
Mary b.2/8/1846 is not on the 1851 (assume she has died) Mary b.1/10/1850 is not on the 1851 or 1861 but a Mary age 7 on the 1861 census could be the other Mary b.16/11/1852.
Marion b.4/9/1848 is on the 1851 age 2 and the 1861 age 12
Janet b.1/10/1850 is on 1851 age 5 months and 1861 age 10
Both Williams are not on the 1861 so i fear they have died too
Agnes is on 1861 age 1.

So i will have to look at the 1871 to see who is left if Agnes has not made it and all the others have left home it might not be very fruitful. I am glad just to sort it out as my head is buzzin. You have all been great!

This is the ancestry entry for the family in 1871. William's occupation is listed as buchloger  Looks like could be the right Agnes to me even though they have her listed as a 'servant'. (Mary and Perisor are servants too!)

Estimated Birth Year: abt 1860

Hi Jean,

That's great thanks - I like the buchloger - bricklayer transcription. I suppose if the person cannot read it they are better to have a go as it all helps us.
I was going to suggest Marion for Perisor Rankin but she would only be 22 - Ann would fit the bill but how would you get Perisor for Ann.
I now have some credits left for the elusive mother and father of William - George Rankin and Agnes Ferguson. Usually it's the other way round and i have loads of possibles and not many credits!
Thanks again,

Ailsa

Perisor is MARION...not even doubtful handwriting! Her age isn't 32 either..it's 22 with an emuerators slash across the middle.

Best wishes
Jean
