Here's a rant from me....it has a bit to do with this subject.

My local supermarket stocked Irn Bru for ages and it was a good seller, there being a lot of Scots in this part of Melbourne. One day it inexplicably disappeared from the shelves. I mounted a campaign to get it back, wrote to head office, had an argument with an employee who swore black and blue that they had never stocked it....arggghhh!

Anyway, head office guaranteed it had been added to the stock, so I kept looking for it but it wasn't back in the usual softdrink aisle. I eventually found out where they put it.

In the Imported goods aisle amongst the Dutch foods.

Why?

Because Scotland is part of Europe, and that's where all the foods from Europe go.

(Which incidentally is PURE rot, since European foods of all kinds are all over the supermarket!

Connected to Tracey's post of Not Waving but drowning.I had no idea there was any flooding up in Moray Banff/Aberdeen areas.
There has been no news coverage down South-yet when the English Counties get flooded it's headline news.
Also I am sick of being corrected for my pronounciation of certain words.
I explain VERY SLOWLY that as a Scot I pronounce each letter, don't add R's into words that don't have them & speak slower than my natural pace so they can catch up with my quick mind & tongue!

I often get "you don't sound like a Glaswegian" to which I reply, "Well I do have to speak slowly and carefully or you'd not understand me".

I can see the cogs working as they try to work out if I'm questioning their intelligence

Several times in England I had people insist I am Irish, and wouldn't believe I'm a Scot. :x Or expect me to know their second cousin who lives in a tiny village the other side of Scotland. :? After all Scotland is such a tiny place, if you look at the weather map...

Personally, I can't get too worked up about it: it's not their fault that they are not as clever as us

What really hacks me off is when otherwise perfectly respectable newpapers and current affairs programmes talk about "British Law" and make statements such as "In Britain we lock up more children than any other European country".

I also find the habit, common in London, of people claiming not to understand what I'm saying most frustrating. When you consider the number of accents around in London, from all corners of the globe, it is simply not credible that a Scot with a not very pronounced accent and minimal Scots in her vocabulary can be unintelligible to the general population.
