Just a thought: James Hecor doesn't happen to be Jame AND Hector, perhaps twins, does it?

why go to edinburgh

Post by bobandbryony » Fri Oct 16, 2009 8:21 am

Hi everyone

thanks as always.

It was a nice idea about twins and would have been a perfect answer - james hector really was only one person and he went on to father 8 children in Edinburgh.

We will keep on trying.

The site for getting census stuff re their address is very good but in this instance did not provide any answers.

Thanks again

Just an update for anyone interested.

It now transpires that the eldest brother of Donald - one John Ross (also a cartwright) was married to Alexandrina Urqhart from Edinburgh whose father was also guess what -a cartwright.

My best guess now (and as one of the earlier replies suggested) is that Donald was working with his brother's father maybe training to be a coach builder which he later became, met Christina who may have been herself working in service in Edinburgh but that they decided to return to Invergordon after the marriage for family support. With no census before 1841 this is supposition only but I feel is plausible. The five year gap before the first child will remain a mystery but as we now know she had bad health and died aged 40 of consumption shortly after giving birth to her last child. Her death certificate confirmed that she had not had any children (living or dead) before 1845.

Thank you for all your suggestions and help.
