Adam

Why not try one email (sent blind) to all the local authority archivists asking if they could identify which of their schools fits your timescale? Then you could email the schools direct ... this project will keep you out of trouble for some time to come!

Hi Adam,

From looking at the Edinburgh schools listed above, these were mostly (all?) fee-paying schools. There should be more schools run by Edinburgh Corporation. I guess the same will apply to the other cities or counties in the list.

All the best,

AndrewP

None of the above Fife Schools are fee paying.

That’s OK Adam,

I just had another look and there’s quite a lot of Higher Grade Public and Church Schools mentioned later in the document. For Edinburgh County there are six of those plus three Technical Colleges. Would the Higher Grade Public Schools be Intermediate Certificate Schools only or did they go right through to Leaving Certificate if applicable?

I’ll email the items shortly.

All the best,
Alan

The old North Glasgow College building was originaly the offices for the North British Locomotive Works.
In the main entrance hall was /is a magnificant stained glass window memorial with the different regimental cap badges featured.

My father lectured there for several years. I had a look to see if names were included in the window and found this page:
http://gdl.cdlr.strath.ac.uk/springburn ... gwar13.htm

with not only a list from NBLo Co. but Petershill school too.
Pity they aren't easily read, but hopefully they are still physically 'somewhere'.

Hi Adam

You could try this site for links to schools and colleges.

http://www.rampantscotland.com/education.htm

I also wondered whether it would be worth trying the FP associations of some of the schools, they generally seem to be keen on the history of the schools and often have access to archive photographs. I looked at Robert Gordon's since my father went there and on their website is a copy of the FP magazine The Pelican (issue 2 Autumn 2005) which has on page 13 a snippet about the Combined Cadet Force which says "the college holds a list of all those who died in both world wars" with contact details, and a picture of cadets at the grave of an FP who died in WW2.

Sorry I can't work out how to cut and paste it!

If you google "former pupils" + scotland quite few come up
