Re: Google Maps
Maybe folk could post links to their favourite places in Scotland. Here's some of mine. They don't look much from the road but on a sunny day there's few finer places on earth than the Highlands of Scotland.
The good thing with this is you can work out how to get there and where to park. And all from your armchair on a cold winter evening!
Just find the view you want, then click on the Link button in the top right hand corner of the picture. Copy the URL from the Paste link in e-mail or IM field
Oldshoremore, KLB
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&ie= ... .38,,0,-10
Beach at Ceannabeinne, Durness
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&ie= ... .38,,0,-10
Easdale Island, Lorn
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&sourc ... 5,,1,-4.34
And many an afternoon was spent here when I was a boy. Loch Brora. You used to be able to park down by the whin bushes but after some travellers camped out there a few years ago boulders were put across the track.
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&sourc ... 77.42,,0,5
Kind regards
Adam

Re: Google Maps
Here's another one. I've never been able to enjoy the view from the Bridge Over the Atlantic before. I've always been looking for something coming the other way.

Re: Google Maps
Thanks very much Andy, that’s great news.
I much prefer using Google Earth to access this material, I can pick up the Maps URL from there should I need it. I checked a couple of weeks ago and nothing much was happening. Now, all of a sudden, it’s as if they’ve turned on the lights all over the UK.
I can’t offer anything very new and interesting in Scotland as my lot were Edinburgh, Edinburgh, and still more Edinburgh. However here’s something new on there from Wales that means a lot to me. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source= ... 4,,0,24.74
Toward the very end of the 1700’s my GGG Grandfather, whose ‘middle name' was Jesus, and who was a Calvinistic Methodist, used to harass the parishioners of the Llangybi Parish Church in Caernarvonshire. The problem, as he saw it, was that every Sunday the minister and parishioners used to leave the church after a hurried service and cross the road to the Tyn-y-Porth Inn where they all got sozzled.
He’s buried in the churchyard, along with my GG Grandmother and probably others of my family. The street view gives you an idea of the real atmosphere of the place which is something you don’t get from the overhead or from an ordinary photograph. Thanks to Google.

This time round, parts of Princes Street (the parts which were not closed for the tram works) have been pictured by Google Streetview.

Re: Google Maps
Hello Anne,
Before Google Maps etc came along I expected there would have been a superhighway or something through the village but there’s not a lot of room for one and it doesn’t seem to have changed since they built the Inn.
And Andrew, I’ve seen a few shadows of the Google camera and thought they would have been some sort of a van that had a bit more height although I suppose anything bigger than what they’re using could get in the way of the camera. That’s the first time I’ve seen the real thing. It’s a wonder one hasn’t been stolen although it’s probably a bit too obvious and a bit too top-heavy to be able to outrun the constabulary.
All the best,
Alan

Re: Google Maps
Interesting to see that in person, Andrew! The shadow of the camera is very prominent in the views near our house here in France. Looks like the sun was bright that day and it was late in the afternoon, from the angle. Our house is nicely hidden though- heh hehAndrewP wrote: A Google maps streetmap view showing a Google maps camera car.

Re: Google Maps
Thank you so much for that link Adam. I used to live in Balvicar, so used to "Cross the Atlantic" every time I went shopping in Oban.Adam Brown wrote:Here's another one. With your link I was again able to "virtually drive home". Wonderful =D>

Re: Google Maps
When I was visiting my cousin in Oban last May, the google camera came around. They parked on the street and waited for everyone to go to work so that there would be no cars on the street when they took the pictures.

Now I can see Murlaggan, on the banks of the stunning Locharkaig where some of my MacMillan ancestors originated, any time I like =D> . Under the tree is the cairn some of the 'returning' MacMillans erected in 2002 to mark the spot where our ancestors lived before so many of them were 'cleared'. I'm filled with a mixture of terrible sorrow and enourmous pride everytime I visit or think of the place.
