OK, if anyone wants to they are perfectly free to spend £75, thereby wasting £50 or more !

There's only ever been the one edition of Black's "Surnames of Scotland", currently in reprint, standard price in UK bookshops £25, and £18:50 on line from WH Smith.

Initially it came out as a paperback in the UK some years ago, but has been in hardback now in the UK for some years. Previously it had to be ordered from the USA - -the Publications Office of the New York Public Library, where George F[raser] BLACK was a librarian, latterly the high heid such, for 35 years up to his death in 1948.

The first printing was in 1946, with the 9th (US) reprinting in 1989.

Later editions have included some minor amendments and additions from Mary Elder Black.

How on earth people think that they will get £75 or more, I don't know, unless we're talking a 1st Edition ! Maybe of interest to a book collector ? ...............

I've noticed this on Amazon and elsewhere, i.e. highly inflated prices even when a book is still in print and easily available; understandable when a book is out of print, and/or someone is offering a first edition, or whatever; but not here when you can walk into any decent bookshop in the UK and buy it for £25.

Even someone living abroad probably won't pay that much more than £25 if they buy on line from WH Smith at £18.50 + P&P, taking into account international postage.

But, if anyone wants to buy from Amazon at £75, please feel free to do so !

And that's without looking for a second hand copy from several websites; as who's worried about a copy being a bit worn, as long as it's readable.

mb, sadly my wallet isn't loaded and unless the book is gold plated from Amazon I think i will pass there. I have ordered it from Smith's but it has a 1-2 week wait time. Im in no rush anyway.

AndrewP, I found some from a family history website for Lanarkshire etc which are pretty much what I am after, however I do not know if they are for public use or as long as you cite where you got it from. They are just outlines rather than details about where towns and places are. Very easy to colour that way. :)

David,

The hard cover book costs $50 in the USA. You'd have to be out of your mind to pay 75 pounds for this book.

I wouldnt have paid the amazon price anyway

www.whsmith.co.uk is showing availability as 1 - 2 weeks, at the £18.50 price.

In any case, Amazon has copies available at £25 ..............

ScotlandsFamily has some very nice County/Parish maps http://www.scotlandsfamily.com/parish-maps.htm

You can easily get rid of the ‘shadow’ from the previous page by increasing the contrast in a photo editing program. If you are into that sort of thing (and provided the maps are to the same scale – or you can force them to the same scale) you can assemble a very large Scotland map out of all the pieces.

Thanks Alan, I managed to find them yesterday and with a bit of editing I could clean them up and make them very useable.

So back to my earlier question, for these images, that Alan mentioned what are the copyright terms attached to them if anyone knows?

Also I would still like to hear from anyone who has done a one name study and how they managed there data and what exactly did they record.

Cheers,
Andy

Hi Andy,
Have you checked out the Guild of One-Name Studies? They may have suggestions and examples:

All the best,
