I wonder how many untruths are in the Census information given.
I know in Australia you do not have to put your name on your Census form and who would check if you completely fabricated your Salary, Religion or anything else.
As far as your name on the Census form I suppose it could be added by the collector.
AND how many people don't fill in Census forms, many. Some out camping while travelling around Australia, in Hotels where you could just omit handing in your form to reception and many other ways.

Hibee is quite right, the census was never designed for folks looking up their roots. As an enumerator at the last census one of the reassurances to suspicious participants (younger householders in particular) was that this has nothing whatsoever to do with "The Social" and that the info' is locked away for a century. As for non-compliance in filling out the form, I only had one refusal in my entire patch, I told his old neighbour the size of the fine he risked, he scoured the district looking for me for a form.

What really really bugs me is ancestors who either didn't know where they were born or who their mainly Father was but occasionally both parents or lied about all three.
I much prefer my heilan McKimmie's/Frasers who were quite candid at having several different Fathers for their various children than my especially Ayrshire ones who fabricated all sorts of names for alleged husbands/Fathers but alas couldn't even keep it consistent-excepting for my very definite GGGGreat-Grandmother Elizabeth Lynn who states on all official documentation that she is single /never married! She was a Wigton lass though although lived most of her early adult life in Ayrshire & ended up in Govan.
That's another bug why did they move so seemingly randomly? What took my GGGreat-Grandfather Ross from Tain to East Greenock? He was single making a decent living as a Blacksmith until he moved in about 1869.Why?
Oh & those who "collect" names rather than research their Family trees! And get it wrong & will not be corrected!

Joette, the Tain economy would have been somewhat limiting to an ambitious guy, Greenock on the other hand, boomed, not so different from circumstances today, people move for money!

And the one family I have sisters who were Anne and Annie and both were sometimes called Anna and the Anne and Annie seem to be interchangeable, so trying to work out who is who gives me a headache
