Hi Maureen
A post in the relevant section on http://www.rootschat.com/ could also be well worthwhile, as you'll find there a load of folk with similar English research expertise to those here on TalkingScot with Scottish expertise.

Re: Researching in England
In my experience it might be quicker for you to try to obtain certificates you need before you arrive here. Going directly to a local Register Office isnt usually much more helpful, you still have to give them the reference number and take pot luck unless you happen to find a particiually helpful office who may let you take a peek at the book before hand. When i needed a death cert in Dorset a lady on the phone kindly made sure i was ordering the right one before hand (only two helpful instances out of a lot of certificates ordered !).
Since *Who Do You Think You Are* began, for me, it has been quicker to order from GRO than local office. I used to be able to go to my local office give them the information needed and go back in a few hours and collect the certificate. Last time i went there was a six to eight week wait with them and got it in under two from GRO. WDYTYA still make it look like you get things instantly (along with Heir Hunters !) It maybe an idea to try and get a wait time from the office you are interested in.
Our main library has a small amount of bmd,s on microfiche which isnt widely known about so as mentioned before a Local FHS or Local Studies will be your best bet on getting your time *organised*.
Just my tuppence worth................hope you enjoy your visit and dont forget to pack your wellies and a brolly - were having a drought
