Depends very much on when and where. Any clues to such details for the person you are looking for?

In the US, as with all vital records, what is available varies by state ~ and varies greatly. For some states, records are close to completely sealed; in others, almost everything extant is on-line. For many, some is on-line and some isn't, depending on the dates (50 year privacy limit common) or which county kept the records. en you need to add the layer of whether something is free or not.....

Worth having a look at the latest FamilySearch blog entry at https://familysearch.org/blog/en/online ... h-records/ which has links to their Wiki detailing what is available in each state of the USA.

Thanks guys...didn't realise that each state was so different!

Trying to put things in to context as it's a total stab in the dark that he went abroad...I know where he was up until about 1921 then NOTHING!!!!????? Doesn't help he changed his name to avoid debt so who knows how many alias he had.

What I have so far is:
1858, March 26th - Born (Airdrie) Robert Condie
1851 - Living in Kilsyth
1871 - 1891 - Living Govan and Kinning Park
1889, June 14th - Married Mary Ann Fraser (03/01/1868 - 01/01/1907)
1901 - Living in Andeston Glasgow
1909, Feb - Living Campsie St Glasgow (Application for Poor Relief using name Robert Fraser)
Robert to Barnhill Work House, Children - Magdelene, Robert, Annie, George, William, Jeanie and Mary to Stobhill Hospital
1909, June - Living King St Govan
1909, Aug - Children back to Robert - address unknown
1921, Aug 23rd - Witness at marriage of son George Paterson Fraser and Elizabeth Miller Wortherspoon Meikle - 7 Bridgegate Glasgow

This is where the line goes cold ... :?
No idea where he was living or what happenend to him.
