All the tenements on three corners seem to be matching. https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=5 ... 8,,0,-13.3

Thanks again for all the comments.

On the 1911 census my grandfather is listed as an electric crane driver in the boilermaking industry. I'm wondering if he worked at Babcock and Wilcox on Porterfield St, Renfrew. They were big boilermakers and also had an Electric Crane Dept (at least from 1920). Thanks to your help, I now know that he lived close to the Renfrew Ferry, so he could have easily taken the ferry and cycled to the works.

Does anyone know of any other boilermaking factory in the area?

Cheers
Alistair

Hello Alistair,

Here’s the Glasgow Post Office Directory for 1912/13 but I’m not knowledgeable enough about the geography to easily say which of the Boilermaker companies listed were close to the Ferry. http://archive.org/stream/postofficean1 ... 2/mode/2up

On this Ancestry page there’s a thumbnail of an old photograph of what is claimed to be Wisharts Buildings. I can’t see the full size version but it looks a bit like the tenements previously mentioned. http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse. ... gss=angs-d

All the best,
Alan

Hi Alan,
That link just (for me) comes up with a search with empty results. I have a subscription, so maybe the site is automatically doing something else. But in case everyone has the same problem, could you walk us through the search that found the thumbnail?

Thanks,
Sarah

On using the link above I see a list of search results including the following:

I don't have a subscription that will take me beyond that.

All the best,

Hi Alan and Sarah,

Thanks very much for the links and the photo of Wishart Buildings. It looks like they are the tenaments on Dumbarton Road (formally Yoker Road) that are still standing. Thats great!

Cheers!

I too was wondering if he was working at Babcock & Wilcox.A fair few of my great-uncles & my Grandfather,Father & Uncle worked there at various times.I used to think we owned it! Attended lots of Christmas parties at Babcocks-I loved the trip on the Renfrew Ferry too.Happy memories.
I live about a ten minute drive away from Yoker-it hasn't changed too much over the years.
