Re: Patents?
Yes, thanks Alan, I can see it now. I found the bit about tanks.....he seems to have had this idea well before he took over the glass works in Dresden, 1867!
I can see that both the Newton works and the new Irish Glass Bottle Works could have had tanks
in 1870 or so, or even in 1868 which is the first date I have proof of the NLW works in operation (a newspaper report of a pollution complaint!)
I think both Johns were trying to be one of the first to use the new technology.........other works in Scotland and England, even Pilkingtons, were in the middle 1870s....
I have to reorientate! - cheers, Alison.

Re: Patents?
Greetings again.
Like the other ALAN [currie] I had a small play around last night, but was not very successful at all. Surprising how fast the search sites have moved on, in six to ten years. I will have to relearn the processes all over again, should I wish to further my line of searches into milking machine development. In my case, I was lucky enough to have directors of very big international companies, like De Laval helping me to find the patents.
When searching for British Patent applications the issue number will be preceded with the letters GB; [FR for France; US; NZ; AU; DR etc.] and you may need to add a number of zeros at the start in the search box, if it has a specific number of spaces.
I found some of the UK libraries, in the big industrial areas, had collections of early patents, not all registered by residents of their catchment.
Holidays now, so some who helped me are not available at this time, but will keep your quest in mind, and if I find any thing I will get back to you.
Alan SHARP.
EDIT ADDED: PS For starters here is some background advice re UK historic patent searches.
British Library pages advising your options re historic UK patent searches.
http://www.bl.uk/reshelp/findhelpsubjec ... ching.html
Assuming you live in the UK there are listed 13 UK based Libraries with the old historic patent paper indexes, plus expert librarian assistance on hand to help with search advise.

Happy hunting - Alan.

And, as I mentioned on the previous page of this topic, I have found the google patent search very useful: http://www.google.com/patentsCurrie wrote:Some Patent Office material is available online, and there’s possibly some more scattered about.

Re: Patents?
Greetings.
Great work Alan. I too was/am interested, but just don't have the time at the moment to do the digging. Cattle to check, a service to attend, and then a quite day until a family meal this evening, followed by celebrations with relatives tomorrow, which just happens to be the day, most of our group are free of work commitments. Unfortunately in the Waikato there are a lot of cows to me milked twice daily, and someone has to do the work harvesting and processing.
Ongoing research is tempting, but Christmas is but once a year, so here's to Christmas, and a rewarding new year.

Re: Patents?
Computer seems ok now.....
Alan (Currie) I haven't yet found anything definite - BUT some of the Siemens patents I did find could refer to glass furnaces, as well as iron.
AND - over Christmas I was talking to my sister's boyfriend, and he has a contact in Belgium who is a 'patent man' - his words. So I think I will ask him to try for the details of one or two of these.
Also - I found a reference to Siemens demonstrating his furnace in 1870 in Dresden.....surely he wouldn't have shown it without it being patented first?

Re: Patents?
Hi there.
Computer is NOT ok. Replacing it at the weekend - not sure when I get the new one.
Just another quick question while it is working - what would a patent cost to get?
1860 to I881 known so far...........Alison.

Re: Patents?
Hello Alison,
I guess there could be a lot of variables that would impact on the cost. This book has some general info from 1847.

I bet I could make your sad old computer run like a champion, but I don’t make house calls.
All the best,
Alan
