Hi Philrob,
One minor detail. I believe the cemetery should be Sighthill. On looking at the death certificate, I see that the registrar's L and S look very similar.
See Google Map (satellite view) showing Sighthill Cemetery, Glasgow.
All the best,

Hi again Philrob,
Here's another suggestion: It looks like you have the birth OPR for William. Do you also have the birth OPR for Matthew?
Check for the witnesses on the OPR's. Quite often, they were members of the parents families so if one is a Johnston, that would make him or her a relative of Margaret's and give you another clue to her family.

Margaret Robertson (nee Johnston)
Hi Carol,
There is a witness at the birth of her second son (William) named William Johnston - a brother or father perhaps?

If they followed the Scottish naming patterns, then the witness William Johnston would be Margaret's father. Good to know, but maybe not all that helpful given the number of William's you're dealing with! However, if you do locate the cemetery which the families are buried in, then you might find him mentioned on a gravestone.
Also, if you know William Jr.'s birthdate, there was a death or burial OPR for a Margaret Robertson in 1834. If the two are close together, it could be your Margaret given the number of women who died as a result of childbirth.
Lot's of ifs and mights for this one!

James and Margaret Robertson (nee Johnston)
Dear Speleobat2,
Of the two Margaret Robertson deaths near to the time of William's birth in 1834, one of them looks a possibility. She was aged 33 years and died of an inflammation of the bowel. The other one was 83 years old!
Unless there was a newspaper mention of her death I do not see how I can find further information about her death at this particular time.
I will continue to live in hope about finding a cemetery where James is buried and possibly Margaret as well.

Hi Philrob,
I saw your smiley next to my ID. The speleobat comes from my husband and I being cavers. Before our knees gave out we explored caves as a hobby!
Finding records for relatives pre-1855 is often frustrating. Many times either they just don't exist or the information is very sketchy. I'm still looking for my 3x great grandparents. I have the OPR's for my 2x great grandfather, but nothing before that and these people were too poor to afford a gravestone most likely. Some things I guess I'll never find out!

I'm sorry but I couldn't find anything indexed for Margaret in the poorhouse applications. Perhaps the book didn't survive.
I will keep it in my book anyway and try again next time.
