Wilma,

You have to drive into the Horsemill Inn, turn right and it's on a wee road which runs alongside the main road. After maybe a couple of hundred yards, you come to a gate and unless it's lying open, that's as far as you can get.

Hi Everyone,

I've just discovered something interesting. Headswood Cottage appears in different locations in the 1865 and 1896 maps. On the 1896 map it is next to Headswood Laundry and the Little Denny Burn (ie next to the current motorway slip-road) but on the 1865 map this location is marked as Dye Works. In the 1865 map Headswood Cottage is marked where Headswood House is in the 1896 map.

Hi everybody!

I'm really not very bright today...I just deleted my post by mistake! :x

You've all been busy while I've been scouring maps.

Andrew...I might have known! Trust me to miss the deadline!

Anne...Many thanks for those early maps - a fantastic addition! I was just about to say that one of those houses Alan pointed out might have been the cottage afterall - until I received Christine's map.

Christine has beat me to the punch in pointing out the location of the cottage in 1889...told you I was slow! Anyway, this is all so fascinating. I imagine my Ellis family lived in the cottage closer to the laundry works.

Here is Christine's map...

Thanks everyone...it's great to finally pinpoint the location!

Regards,
Anne H

Hello Anne,

Here’s the satellite view, and comparing it to Christine’s map, it looks like there have been some additions to the north-west end since it was originally built. Maybe there are just the slightest traces of the remains of the laundry. http://tinyurl.com/paabqe

I can’t find anything about exactly when the coffin was found but mention of the find appears in “History of Stirlingshire” published 1817. The “newly built house, there, (now called Headswood Cottage,)” would have to be older than that. http://books.google.com.au/books?id=2Kc ... #PPA741,M1

The address of the Horsemill Inn, mentioned by Anne, is Woodyett Farm, Denny, which points to the general vicinity being that of the Woodyet (Woodgate) coffin find.

All the best,
Alan

Given Headswood's close proximity to The Old Hills of Dunipace Burial Ground, a coffin of that age isn't surprising.

This Old Burial Ground is situated within the new Hills of Dunipace Cemetery at map ref: NS836817, although not much can be seen through the trees.

For a wee bit of history, have a look here:

The Antonine Wall runs pretty close too, so there'd be Romans all over the place

Hi Anne and Alan,

Many thanks for the additional links and information. I'll have to have a closer look later on since I'm just back from my "Mother's Day" dinner and had a large glass of wine which has made me very sleepy!

Cheers!

Hi Anne,

When taking my Mum out for her birthday lunch we drove past the cottage next to the motorway slip road. It's called Headswoodlea. Alan is correct, there is a newish extension at the back and a double garage at the front. I took my camera but managed to leave the battery in the charger......

Hi Christine,

That was very nice of you...many thanks for taking a look at the cottage. Too bad about leaving the battery in that darned charger - I'll just have to be content to look at it on the map.

I hope your mother had a lovely birthday lunch. :)

Regards,
Anne H

Hi Anne

I pass this cottage every day going to work and I've always thought it was a very nice house. It's a beautiful sunny day in Denny so I will go tonight and get you a couple of pictures (although I think i will chap the door and ask permision first) and hopefully e-mail them to you tomorrow.

Diane :)
