Success! I found John Paterson's death certificate on a two day trip to Edinburgh after trawling through many many records. I was correct in my assumption that he was married to Marion Martin.
He died in the district of Gourock in 1884, his usual address given as 52 Gilmour Street, Glasgow. He was first married to Agnes Gourlay then Marion Martin. His parents were Walter Paterson, a soldier, deceased, and Elizabeth Paterson, afterwards Johnstone and m.s.McKinlay, deceased. He was aged 76 when he died of apoplexy. This discovery has led to the generations before him living in Fintry, Callander and Killearn. Thanks to you all for your suggestions.

I also have a copy of the murdered Walter Paterson's death certificate in 1876. He was an engineer, single, died at Gartnavel Royal Lunatic Asylum, Partick, Glasgow. He was 54 years old. His parents were George Paterson, a gaswork manager, and Marion Paterson, m.s. Neilson. Cause of death was fracture of the skull compound with depression.
I then looked for a family connection to William Muir and discovered that Marion Neilson's mother was a Marion Muir so there may be a connection between William Muir and his victim Walter Paterson.

Bron, I noticed that you said that someone else had more children for Thomas Mitchell and Margaret wares Muir but there were only Thomas, Evelyne and John and when she married George Hamilton they had George Hamilton, William Hamilton and Ian Hamilton so in all Margaret Wares Muir had six children. Her son Thomas Mitchell, and daughter Evelyne Mitchell, who married Harold Mills emigrated from Scotland to Canada. Margaret's youngest son by Thomas Mitchell, John Cross Mitchell, my Grandfather stayed in Scotland and took over the butcher shop in Rutherglen. I have no idea where the 'Cross' middle name came from as I haven't noticed it in earlier generations.
Bron, when you say "I've met you" and that the gros info on Margaret Wares Muir was provided by Jean, it wasn't by me.
Have you taken the Muir family back further than William Muir born 1765, married in 1786 to Margaret Stevenson? They are, I think, James Muir's parents.
