SarahND wrote:Having looked at the lineup in 1891, I'm betting on Evelyn as Dolly. She was the baby of the family by a long stretch and the last girl after three intervening boys. Just the right set-up for a little "doll" of a baby sister...

My husband's late mother's first names were Edith Lydia. She was universally known as 'Babs'..........because she was the baby of the family.

Future generations could have found it difficult to track her down if they had assumed her name was Barbara.

I had a gt gt aunt known as Dollie by all the family but never in official documents. I eventually identified her (there were 5 other sisters) as Catherine!!
I think we can safely say here that Dollie could stand for anything!

Meg
Main family lines are Harpers from Midlothian, Fife & Kinross-shire, and Dobies/Dobbies from Midlothian. Also Strathearn, Stobie, Layden and Downie.

I'm beginning to think "Dolly" was either Lilian or Eva, as we think that Dolly was younger than Ethel, and it has been suggested that Cliff/Athol was 'of an age' with Dolly, which may mean that he was born to a young mum!
If there were middle names recorded then we might have had a clue there, but thus far nothing is ringing any bells.
That's the trouble with nicknames I suppose, as the years pass knowledge of who was who fades.
We had a neighbour call Tam who was always known as Jock, as his wife was English and had met him when he was a 'Jock' during the war. That'll be fun for some poor soul doing the family tree in the future...........

Hi,

My mothers name was Dolly but her real name was Flora. Her father called her Dolly because she was such a tiny child.
