My Mother-in-law was named Doris and was called Doll or Dolly.

She had a sister named Elizabeth but was called Cis or Cissie.

There maiden name was Mackness and were born in London.

Hi Jake

Did any of the sisters have middle names. I have one family of 1 boy, 7 girls - they were all known by their middle names or diminutives of same

No midle names available from the Census returns I'm afraid and all I have is Alice, Mary, Ellen, Lily and Evelyn, apart from the boys names of course!
And there's no Arthurs Currie!

I had a Great Auntie Dolly, who "went on the stage". She took a bit of finding!
Turned out to be Sarah Dorothy :D

Hmmm, lots of possibilities really eh? I'll have a look and see if I can find any Cooper connections who might have an inkling of who Dolly was.
Seems she may not have been married and had a son called Cliff or Athol, which is of no use whatsoever as there may or may not have been a father's surname, or Dolly's own Cooper name to attach to it!

A subscription to the English Census site looks essential after all, but as they are the only non Scots lookups I need it seemed pointless.

Hi Jake,
As I said before, I think it might help if you could eliminate the other sisters. I see the whole family in Shere in 1881, then Ethel is a scullery maid in Shere in 1891 and a Parlor Maid in Morden, Surrey in 1901. Have you tried to trace the other sisters to see what happened to them?
All the best,
Sarah

Aye Sarah, I'll take out a sub with the English Ancestry site and search for them, and see what turns up. I only use Scotland's People as all my links are with Scotland really.
