Goodness ladies, I'm overwhelmed!
I have the 1881 census return, Anne, and as Sarah says I'll need to chase up the sisters to see if I can find the son, Cliff or Athol, and take it from there to find some more modern links.
Ethel's mum is given as Rose, and her name was Eliza Rose Ladd, her mother was Ellen Arrow, two names not difficult to spot!

I think that Ethel and her husband, my grandad, returned to the area around Shere, as my mother, who lived there for a while, talked about towns and parks around there which she had visited as a girl.
Grandad could be buried in Leatherhead, as could Ethel, and the 450 mile journey south is all that is stopping me from making the trip to do a search on the ground.
Luckily, Kew is nearby, which might be a source of information at the records office where John Bain Gardner's war record will be kept, and his pension records I hope. They should shine a light on where he was when he was drawing his pension, thus a clue to where they all worked and lived.
I Hope!

Having looked at the lineup in 1891, I'm betting on Evelyn as Dolly. She was the baby of the family by a long stretch and the last girl after three intervening boys. Just the right set-up for a little "doll" of a baby sister...

Anne, you're much more enterprising than I am tonight :D I just downloaded the images and stared at them, without bothering to type anything into the post  But then, I'm at least 6 hours later than you are here [snore]
[cheers]

Arthur and Evelyn are new additions ladies; much obliged. And I agree; our Dolly could well be the new baby Evelyn.

I have no access to the 1891 and 1901 census returns from here, and I wonder if the latter metions an more Wee Coopers?
A contact in the Shere Village website mentioned that Ethel came from a big family, other than that they had no more information but the lady very kindly got in touch saying that they would seek more news and get back in touch, but thus far all is quiet. I'll be sure to look them up when I manage to get down there, as she suggested.

I'm still tearing my hair out trying to find them in 1901  Not sure how they are indexed... but it's nothing obvious! Except Ethel, as I said.
I'll keep looking-- they must be there somewhere!
Sarah

Later: got them! Indexed as being born in Shere, Devon :!:

No, Eva is the last child, so no more to worry about!
