Forname Janet?

Post by julie d » Sat Jan 26, 2008 7:52 pm

I have found the name JOANET in my tree, her mother was Joanet also. When looking in IGI, the parents of Joanet and siblings are Joanet and John Donaldson. My query is that I have found more children born around the right time, and the same place, with parents listed as John Donaldson and JANET, and John Donaldson and JONET, does this mean it the children are siblings or are these totally different parents

Hi julie d,
I would think that almost certainly Jonet and Janet are the same person, different spellings. Not sure what time frame we're talking about, but if any of them lived until statutory records, you could check if their parents were the same...
All the best,
Sarah

Ah...Janet!
Also known as Jannet, Jonnet, Jonet, Jonnat, Jennet, Jenet, sometimes Jane, even Jean & of course Jessie, probably a few I've missed and now also Joanet!

Best wishes
Lesley

I spent seven months looking for my my 2x great grandmother Jessie Milne who even had a granddaughter named exactly that only to find out that her real name was Janet. Consider all the possibilities until you see otherwise in writing. Even then you can't always be sure. Keeps the search interesting! :D

Another variant that I have found for Janet is Jenny. My cousin has just sent me her Mums birth cert, born Glasgow 1919, what a shock I got to find her name wasnt Jenny.

Anne.

How about Jeanette?

Speaking of which, I always thought that was my granny's name because she was known as Nettie. But she was Jane.

Anyone know how you get Nettie from Jane?
