Wrong Linage.

Post by kay » Wed Mar 05, 2008 1:08 pm

:?:

Having no sucess at finding any link to my line's I do wonder if someone may have taken off in the wrong direction,as they may not have the *family information* passed down that I have,?and could have massed data that is all wrong,,,,,

I know my gtgt grandfather Alexander Morrison was married twice and he along with his 2nd wife Ellen/Helen Dick/Heriot-( mmn Thomson ) had 8 children between them then 2 from the marriage.

Having looked at various BDM and census can see easily how with a common name a wrong turn could be took,

hi Kay
The best way to make sure you stay on the correct line is to make sure you document everything as you go with birth, marriage and death records.

I'm not sure where you think things have gone askew...is it to do with the following marriages?
I know my gtgt grandfather Alexander Morrison was married twice and he along with his 2nd wife Ellen/Helen Dick/Heriot-( mmn Thomson ) had 8 children between them then 2 from the marriage.
Do you know in which part of Scotland the marraige(s) occurred? Have you copies of the entries?

best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,

Thanks for reply,

No I have well docoumented information plus narrative family stuff,,but perhaps someone who could be a potentail link may not know what I do,,,and could have through so many like names followed the wrong linage.?

The piece on my gtgtgrandfather is example with many that could have fitted the bill on census...and someone could have taken a first seen name.and folowed it,,but its wrong info they have been gathering.

Regards,
Kay,

Oh yes I have followed a line only to discover at some point they are not mine.
It doesn't happen often as you get a feel for names.places, occupations etc & the fact they moved around or stayed static.

I was lucky to have a family that passed down tales, letters, photos, certificates etc & were fairly accurate in what they said & oh I wrote it down when they told me or taped it.(although my brothers taped over my FH tapes with Ahaa & other 80's bands!)
Researching:SCOTT,Taylor,Young,VEITCH LINLEY,MIDLOTHIAN
WADDELL,ROSS,TORRANCE,GOVAN/DALMUIR/Clackmanannshire
CARR/LEITCH-Scotland,Ireland(County Donegal)
LINLEY/VEITCH-SASK.Canada
ALSO BROWN,MCKIMMIE,MCDOWALL,FRASER.

Hi Kay

I have followed a line that turned out to be false (or not mine) a few times, especially when I was just starting genealogy.
I am more careful now. I am not making so many assumptions. I have this problem when we get back as far as the 18th and early 19th centuries.
Now I write down people as "possibles" and not definite.

Sheila

I have followed the line of a James Donaldson in Rathven who fits the bill for my gt x 3 brother, right age, right place and i was told he became a Tailor like his father and if thats true this James by rights should be mine - but he isn't and there is no other James about !! Something about this James didnt feel right but i had to persue it to put myself out of the misery !
Scotland - Donaldson / Moggach / Shaw / Geddes / Sim / Gray / Mackie / Richards / Joel / Coull / Mckimmie / Panton / McGregor
Ireland and Scotland - Casey / McDade / Phillips / McCandle / Dinely / Comaskey + various spellings
