Belli

Post by hg » Fri Mar 07, 2008 7:25 pm

I am trying to find out some more information on my Italian ancestor Stephano Belli. I have found all the information I can about him when living in Glasgow and Edinburgh but I have been unable to find a date of death. I have his marriage certificate which has his mother (maiden name not ledgible) and father on it but I would really like to find information about where he is from and how he came to the UK. One of the census show him as coming from Parmoor Italy but there is no such place so I assume its Parma.

Hello,

There is a Stephano Belli, born 1844, death indexed in 1879 on the English FREE BMD.
I see his family are still living in Edinburgh (minus Stephano) in 1881.

Annette

Hi Helen,

Are you sure? 7 years off seems pretty accurate for some of my lot  I assume that there are not that many Stephano Bellis around in the U.K. at that time. I'd look into it although, being an English cert, it may not tell you much. :(
Cheers,
Sarah

Hello Helen,

I agree with Sarah, we've all had at least one or two who shaved a few years off their age for whatever reason.

Perhaps he was trying to get work and said he was younger than he was.

The main reason I posted the death was - he and his son were the only Stephan(o) Belli's indexed in 1871 in the whole of UK, and his son was the only one in 1881. I know that doesn't make it 100% positive that the 1879 death his him (and I'm sure it won't help in your quest to discover his roots) but I'd be tempted to find out more.

Regards,
Annette

yes, thanks to you both. I did find this Stephano Belli the other day but didn't think it was anything to do with me. I have been mulling it over though and I agree it is worth looking into. It would tie up with some family talk about his daughter Anna who lived in London.
