You know you're obssesed when...
I had been channel browsing this am-I have recently got a new TV & cable.
I came across a Time Team programme & heard the words Roxburgh.
As I love the show & my Scott ancestors came from the area I decided to watch.
They were excavating a Church. Anyway half watching & half pottering my ears perked up when one of the team mentioned she had a document which may contain the names of the possible inhabitants of the tenements they were excavating.
"Oh maybe I will recognise some names or maybe somebody on TS will be connected"
I listened carefully as she related the names Fletcher-nope.
"This document is dated around the 1300's"
I have not been able to locate my family any further back than the late 1600's & am thrilled at that.
Oh well it was worth a whirl & i enjoyed the show anyway.
My first thought when i meet somebody new for the first time is
"Oh they're called so& so I wonder if they're connected to...?"
What do you do that shows your obsession??

Hi Joette,
Does this count...
Screeching to a halt to photograph placenames and street signs; giving my wife a running commentary of who lived in every mining village and farm we pass by on the way to the shops; asking for a photgraph of every relation mentioned in conversation; knowing more than I should about my four x great uncle's best pal's great grandmother, just because she registered the birth of my 3 x great grandfather's second cousin (once removed).....
Best wishes
Brian

...when you are driving round a town where your ancesters used to have summer holidays, and you are looking for the house they stayed in as you have the name of the house from a postcard written in about 1910. You are having difficulty finding the property, and muttering to yourself (and of course the ancestors in question who you know are listening), "Awww, come on guys, give us sign".
Next thing you know, at the roadside there is a big yellow sign attached to a lampost clearly stating the name of the house and pointing the direction to go, and you find this so funny you are quite unable to explain it to your companion ...and when you have calmed down enough and tell them what the joke was, they look at you blankly....
*the sign which can be seen here:
http://talkingscot.com/gallery/displayi ... ?pos=-1521
was there due to redevelopment of the property into expensive flats, which meant in this case that the original house was no longer there to see, but it is the first time that an exasperated request for "a sign" has actually resulted in one materialising.

Best wishes
Lesley

Oh Dear!
Before reading all of the above I thought it was just me.
Breaking into a completely unrelated conversation with “My Great-grandfather used to live in that suburb over there” and being met with blank looks. Going for a drive (in the older and better days) and on almost every occasion just happening to pass every family history site of even the vaguest significance in the process. Seeing a cemetery and immediately start wondering if that long ago interplanetary abduction is in reality lurking therein.
There should be special Sanatoriums for Genealogists, where the rooms are padded (with old census forms), the grounds are studded with trees (family) and all is surrounded with high soundproof walls (brick) as protection for the rest of the population. It wouldn’t be so hard to take as long as their library had free access to all the desirable sources.

…when a client with the same surname as one of your brick walls comes into the office for information on obtaining a mortgage and all he gets is a lunatic family historian quizzing him about what he knew about his ancestors and where they came from. Well you never know…there could have been a connection! I can still see the look of amazement on his face…and that was a few years ago!
…or when you’re watching TV and all of a sudden you just happen to see a graveyard and you can’t get close enough to read any of the names on the gravestones…doesn’t matter that none of yours are going to be there, I still want to see those names!
Regards,
Anne H

You drive past a cemetry and wonder if you should go in and look, just in case there may be someone born in Scotland, who just might be an ancestor of sommeone on T.S

Okay here's mine....
You look at the Births Deaths and Marriages in the papers every day, hoping to see a connection somewhere (no not too close a connection, hehe).
You see an old photograph and think it resembles great Uncle Fred, and start to wonder if you are related....
You discover you have a surname in your tree which has had some fame in the past, and fervently research the name, never leaving the computer, trying to prove a connection to any famous person of that name....for me it was Carson...Edward Carson? Violet Carson? Kit Carson? Johnny Carson? You see what I mean....
You get all excited when you realise you inadvertantly named one of your children after your great great great grandmother's sister.
You seriously consider whether a family tree printed out and stuck to your wall would make an interesting contribution to your decor. You just know it would be a good talking point....
I could go on....

Hi everyone,
Just wanted to say I only started my research last December and it is sooo addictive. Haven't quite reached the point of screeching to a halt when I spot a 'sign', but I did a posting last week cos' I found a 'Jessie Mcdonald' on a members posting. Afterwards I thought that was so silly, how many Jessie Mcdonalds were there.
I am coming to Edinburgh and Glasgow this week with plans to look for some address' that ancesters lived at and I give every family member and friend an update every time I speak to them, so I am getting there, hehe.
