Hey all,
Just wondering if anyone knows of a good book that gives a definition of Scottish Place names along with a little bit of history. Basically like a dictionary.
I have seen a few about but but if anyone has any recommendations it would be appreciated.
Regards,
Andy

All the best,

Thanks Andrew. I have used that site in the past, i just thought there may have been a book.
Is this site quite reliable?

Hello Andy,
If you search in Google Books for “Scottish place names” there’s a few there that look recent enough to be still in print. If you google for “scottish place names””amazon” you can get a very small “search inside” of the Ross and Nicolaisen books.
Abe Books
http://www.abebooks.co.uk/ has supplies of each of those and similar books by other authors.
If you google “scottish place names””review” there seem to be some there but I don’t know how useful they are.
Hope that’s of some use,
Alan

Hi Andy:
A good place to check is your local library's reference section, so that you can have a look without relying on the publisher's description. Also the library staff may be able to advise which they find most useful.
