What does it mean?

Post by crayspond » Thu Jul 03, 2008 3:37 pm

Hi,

Does anyone know what it means of SP when there is a telephone no in the place of GROS data ?

When the number is clicked it goes straight to skype (which i have ) but the number is invalid. It is a 0100 number.

Thanks

Ailsa

Hi Ailsa:

You may wish to contact ScotlandsPeople http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/conte ... spx?r=1202 It would appear that there is an outdated or broken link.

Hi Ailsa,

This is not a ScotlandsPeople caused problem, it is a Skype caused problem, which has this effect on ScotlandsPeople data.

It sounds like you have Skype installed and at some stage accepted the option that recognises telephone numbers in webpages and makes a link that allows you to click on that link and make a call by Skype. The down side of this Skype option is that some other series of numbers resemble telephone numbers and Skype takes them to be that. In this case, Skype thinks the GROS data is a telephone number.

I had this a few months back and it annoyed me, so I persisted until I found a solution. This solution is for Internet Explorer 7. Other versions of IE or other browsers should have a similar method.
  • In Internet Explorer:
    Tools --> Options --> Programs --> Manage Add-ons
Click on the title bar name to sort them into alphabetical order.
Work your way down the list until you find Skype (there may be a few Skype entries there).
The one you need to find will be described as type Browser Extension, File SkypeIEPlugin.dll
Click on that item, then go to the panel below and find settings then select disable.
    Then OK.
All the best,

AndrewP

AndrewP

Thanks for that - i will get my son to have a look as we have Mozilla firefox and i can't get the same instructions to come up as you said for internet explorer. It doesn't help that i have 2 exact names and years to look at!
If anyone can have a look - i am really trying to see if there is any witnesses i.e John or James Beveridge.

2 22/08/1760 BEVERIDGE ADAM MARGARET DONALDSON/FR241 M Saline (Fife) /FIFE 455/ 0010 0222 VIEW (5 CREDITS) ORDER
3 27/06/1760 BEVERIDGE ADAM MARGARET DONALDSON/FR3028 M Dunfermline /FIFE 424/ 0100 0022 VIEW (5 CREDITS) ORDER

Notice when i copied this the skype icon and phone symbol don't show up.

Thanks,

Ailsa

I use firefox but not Skype.

In my firefox, there is a pull down menu called Tools. (up at the top, a few to the right of File).

This menu has an entry called Add-ons. If you select this you get a little window that allows you to disable individual add-ons.

I suspect you will find something Skype-ish in this list and be able to turn it off.

You'll be happier and your son will be amazed! :)

Best of Luck,

Mark

Hi Ailsa,

I was discussing this one with an IT consultant friend and he pointed out where that feature can be switched off within Skype.

Skype --> Options --> Advanced Settings
Uncheck the tick-box for Associate Skype with callto: links on the web.

That should do the job.

All the best,

Thanks to AndrewP and Heymarkey for your help i disabled it on the Mozilla site by myself :) as Heymarkey advised - without my son's help ! (for a change).
I have went back in to the SP page it was showing on and it has now gone.

Thanks again,

Ailsa
