Please help with search

Post by Dugie4 » Sat Jul 12, 2008 1:07 pm

Greetings! I am a new user here.

If somone can give me any help with finding information I would be very grateful.

I am trying to find out about an ancestor of my by illegitimacy, Dugald Blair Brown.

I have found an obituary which says that he was born in 1847 (doesn't say where) and died in 1898 in India, while serving in the army. I have found his gravestone in Edinburgh.

I can't find either his birth certificate or his death certificate, and that's what I need help with. Can someone give me a clue with that please? If a Scot died in India would his death certificate be in Edinburgh?

I have found him on the 1871 census. I'm not sure how to post the page here but I think it gives his birthplace as 'Lanark, Glasgow'. Could that be right?[/img]

Hi Dugie 4,

Welcome to Talking Scot [scotland-flag]

If you look on the IGI there is the birth of Dugald Blair Brown 04 Mar 1847 in Gorbals, Lanarks. Parents John Stewart Brown & Alexandrina Blair.
Someone should be along soon to help with your other questions!

Paula
Searching for Barclay Aberdeenshire, Stewart Edinburgh, Brown Edinburgh & Uphall, Finlayson E Lothian, Fairley & Renton E & W Lothian for starters!

Hi Dugie
And welcome to Talking Scot :D

The IGI has an entry which looks likely:
  • DUGALD BLAIR BROWN
    Male
    Birth: 04 MAR 1847
Christening: 08 APR 1847 Gorbals, Lanark, Scotland

    Parents:
    Father: JOHN STEWART BROWN
    Mother: ALEXANDRINA BLAIR
It is an extract, so you should be able to see the original either on microfilm, or as a OPR download from Scotlands People.

Looks like the same couple had two other children (from IGI) :
LIVINGSTONE BROWN (female) Ch. 12 JAN 1849 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland
WILLIAM DOBSON BLAIR BROWN b. 28 FEB 1851 East Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi LesleyB

Many thanks for that! It's just great finding things after a fruitless search!
What's the IGI?
And do you have any clues about his death certificate?

I'm very grateful to you!

Best regards

Hi Dugie
What's the IGI?
Go to www.familysearch.org
Click on the yellow search tab along the top.
Then, in the left menu click on International Genealogical Index.

Best wishes
Lesley

This obit. in the BMJ says he died in 1896 by the look of things:
http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/pagere ... ageindex=1
Br Med J. 1896 February 15; 1(1833): 443
Date of birth suggests it is the same man as found on IGI.

Someone else is interested in him and his descendants:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/blair/messages/4029.html
- the person's email address is available there, so it would be possible to contact him.

Hi again
If a Scot died in India would his death certificate be in Edinburgh?
His death can be found in the Service and War Returns in 1896, on Scotlands People. See link at top of page for SP. It is a pay per view site.
He is listed as Dugal Blair Brown.

Best wishes

Hi Dugie:

This may be the reference to ScotlandsPeople that Lesley was mentioning

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/conte ... ?r=551&965

There are several different links on that page referring to military records, which I hope will be of some help.

Hi Dugie
Sorry, didn't mean to confuse you!

Just go to Scotlands People, and sign in. Once logged in, click on Deaths 1855-2006
Enter the details... all you need is to put in is:
surname:Brown
Forname: Dugal
Change year range to 1896 - 1896 and click Search.
There are 2 matches. One of them is Dugal Blair Brown.
You will need to click View (and pay a credit) to see this.
From there you can choose to download a copy of the death entry (for 5 credits).

However, it is worth noting that the Service and War Returns may not give the degree of information that a normal death entry would give. The ones I 've seen do not state parents, only name, age at death and date of death and place of death. The ones I've seen have been WW1 cases, so may it may be different to this one, I don't know.

See http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/conte ... ?r=554&404 for a bit more info on the different types of returns and sample documents.

(The Service & War returns are there as a search option on the Death search page on SP where it says:
County/City/Minor Records: > choose Minor Records.
Then in the box below you will see the list of records this category covers:
but with this particular search, as his name is quite unusual, you don't need to narrow it down like this. )

Best wishes
Lesley
