RCE help

Post by mcblondie » Mon Aug 11, 2008 7:53 pm

Hi there,

Me again :)

I was wondering if anyone can help me with a querie. I've got a death cert for my uncle who was 15 when he died in 1930 due to injuries to the head. He was a pit head worker, but I don't know if this is where the injury took place It has an RCE on SP but is there anywhere i can find more information as to what caused the injury? Will there be additional information elsewhere on record?

Thanks,

Katie

Hi Katie,

I'm sure I've seen a query along these lines before but I can't find it.

You could try contacting the Scottish Mining Museum. If you know which pit they might have records of injuries/accidents.

Worth a try anyway if no-one comes up with any other ideas.

Hi Katie
Not clear if you have already downloaded the RCE? If not, that would be a good first step as it may tell you more.

If it was as a result of a pit accident, there is a good website listing pit accidents. http://www.mining-villages.co.uk/5.html

Best wishes
Lesley

Re: RCE enquiry

Thanks to all the replies,

I looked for mining accidents, but nothing relating to my uncle. What i have done is I've contacted the Procurator Fiscal for Hamilton relating to this and asked through the Freedom of Information act. I've emailed them a copy of the RCE and I'll await a reply.

You never know, they may come up with some information or records.

I'll keep you all posted.

:)

Hi Katie

The RCE entry for a 1930 death will be available for a paltry 2 credits on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk , but it looks like you already have this?

It's near certain that the Scottish Mining Museum at http://www.scottishminingmuseum.com/ will have some more info, as they hold most of the relevant pre-nationalisation accident records, which are extensive, not only for fatalities, but any accident reported.

The Sheriff Court record of the FAI (Fatal Accident Inquiry) may have survived to the present day, so that it's worth contacting NAS and/or consulting the on-line index. The local Procurator Fiscal may refer you to NAS !

It's also near certain that there would have been an article in the local newspaper, or other newspapers, particularly if there was more than one fatality involved.
