Hi Frances,
Thanks for your help. I think I have managed to send the certificates, it came up I was successful anyway - God knows how, I'd just about lost the will to live!
Told you I'm not techinically minded!
I forgot to write what I wanted deciphering though
Whoops. There are 2 certificates:
Robert Scott - i'm trying to decipher his mother's first name column 5.
(later)
Elizabeth Scott - mother's maiden name under Helen Duncan column 5.

Sorry about that little mistake!!
Thanks
Elaine.

hi Elaine
Looks like Sheret - I suspect this is the same surname that is sometimes spelt Sherrit/Sherret, and I expect there are other variations, Best to use wildcards on SP to cover the variations. See:
viewtopic.php?t=10334
Best wishes
Lesley

There is a marriage of a Helen Shirret and a -William- Duncan recorded under the dates of 1 March 1788 in the parish of St Cyrus, Kincardine, and 15 March 1788 in the parish of St Vigeans, Angus. These will not be dates of marriage but will most likely be a record of the calling of the banns (in the parishes that William and Helen belonged to - I don't know which is which, but you will have to look at the original entries to see which one is for which person and what is being recorded under these dates in each case) or it could be anything from the registering of the person's intent to marry, to the calling of the banns, or a note saying that the banns had been called and the minister had issued a certificate to that effect. You may be lucky and it might also add that the couple were married on such and such a date.
It looks as if the informant for the death did not know the name of her maternal grandfather and gave John as his name ...
Robert Scott married Elizabeth Duncan 31 Jan 1808, Montrose, according to submitted entries (so beware!) on the IGI. There may well be OPR entries for this event which you should consult also.
A parent search on IGI throws up children born 1808 to 1826 (with none recorded between the child b. 1816 and the next recorded in 1822 - I would have expected one in 1818 and another on 1820 - maybe there was a gap in the records or maybe they did not survive ...)

Hi there,
Thanks for that info about William and Helen. I'm not sure if this is same Helen though. I have a death cert for Eliz Scott (their daughter) and it shows her parents as John and Helen Duncan (nee Sheret).
I do have a printout of Robert and Elizabeth's children and with the help of others on the forums last night we found Robert's death certificate, although we are still searching for his birth.
Will work on this one!
Thanks for your help.
Elaine

Hi Elaine,
That's Robert's death certificate upladed for you.
http://talkingscot.com/gallery/displayi ... ?pos=-1609
I'd say the mother's first name was Ruby.
I would recommend that you try keep your ScotlandsPeople download certificates as TIF files rather than JPG. JPG files compress the image, and often lead to a poorer quality, less clear. The birth, marriage and death certificates, and census pages all start off as TIFs. The OPR images are JPGs and are best left that way.
All the best,
AndrewP
