Hi.
I have recently started tracing my paternal line and I have got as far as my GGGrandfather John Duncan who married Janet Craig. My problem is that I am unsure if I have found the correct death record for him.
On his wedding certificate it states that his parents are John Duncan and Maragret Lumsden but I am unable to find any record of this marriage.
I have found the death record of Janet Craig (Died 1921 Inveresk) and using that I thought I had found the death record of GGG John LOFTUS Duncan (Died 1926) as it states that he was widower to Janet Craig at same address. Unfortunately his parents are listed as WILLIAM Duncan and Margaret MOFFAT.
John and Janet were living in Temple and Carrington at time of their marriage and when i do a search for William and Margaret I have found a marriage record for Carrington and a Baptism record for a John Lochtie Duncan at Carrington. The years of these events seem to match also.
John and Janets son was called William so there may be a connection there.

I found the family of William Duncan and Margaret Moffat in 1851 at FREECEN.

Couldn't find find them in 1861 but did find Helen age 13 and James age 10 boarding with a Stewart family at Carrington. There is also a William Duncan age 8 and John Duncan age 6 boarding with a Gibson family at Carrington. I believe these are the children of William and Margaret.
Margaret died in 1855 but she was named Marion on her death cert. I couldn't resist looking at it so if you want to PM me with your email address I'll send it to you. It lists all the children including John.
So...............it looks as though William senior may have died too before 1861 and the orphaned children were boarded out. I really think this is your family and John didn't know his parents names when he married. By the time he died he (or his son) knew his ancestry.
