How Sad

Post by mcblondie » Fri Sep 19, 2008 10:12 am

Hi all,

Hope this finds you all well :)

Recently I emailed South Lanarkshire Council in regards to my relations death/burial records in Blantyre, I emailed both my grandparents death dates and ten of their children's death dates ranging from 1918 to 1944. The "coonsil" were excellent, they called me yesterday to say that I was spot on with all the dates so it made it easy for them to find the records. Anyways, I explained that I knew where my grandparents were laid to rest as I have visited the grave often, but I didn't know where any of their children where resting? Sadly it turns out that 10 of the 14 children that they had where all buried on common ground "unmarked graves" :( How sad is that. Obviously my grandparents didn't have the means in those days to afford burial plots. The only plot that was purchased is the one that my grandmother purchased when my grandfather passed away in 1968, and that is where they and my father are now resting.

I'm still on my mission to solve my Lithuanian roots, but getting nowhere fast. Oh well onwards and upwards.

Bye for now.

Hi Katie,

Yes, it is sad that the wee souls were buried in common ground.

Did you know that you can still request the location of exactly where in the 'common ground' section they are?

I know that South Lanarkshire have excellent cemetery maps - a colleague of mine recently got some copies for various cemeteries (I don't know if Blantyre was among them) and although they were only A4, they showed where each Plot/Lair was in each Section.

If you intend a wee visit, you could ask them if they could send you a wee map?

Thanks Ann,

I might just do that. South Lanarkshire Council have been absolutely great with all their help, couldn't ask for better service.
