Just a wee catch up from my post earlier in the week, l sat night in peace and quiet and went over a lot of work that i had done previously, right back to the start to see if i had missed any clues, only to find that my Robert Millar Thomson had a twin brother!
It was doublely ( no pun intended!) exciting as i am the proud gran of twin boys, and who says they don't run in familys!
One happy bunny!

Hi Susan,
As the father of twin girls (nearly 11 months) I've become rather more interested in 'twindom' than I would have previously and was told that fraternal (or non-identical) twins were the ones that ran in families, and that they come down the maternal line. Does that fit in with your family?
Neither my wife or I are direct descendants of families with twins, however our little scones look like they are the 10% of fraternals who are in fact identical (i.e. one egg split and two placentas were formed) which apparently is just one of natures little surprises, and not inherited. I have found distant cousins on my side of the family with twins and triplets, but seemingly this has no bearing on our situation. I'm sure there's someone out there on TS that is better informed about all of this!
It's fascinating stuff as I'm sure you've found out being the proud gran!
Cheers,
Scott

I always thought the myth was that twins "skipped" a generation. There are a few instances where this happens in my family. I have a friend who is a twin in as much as she was born at the same time as her brother but in fact she was concieved at a different time
I suppose like everything theres no rhyme or reason...........
Scotland - Donaldson / Moggach / Shaw / Geddes / Sim / Gray / Mackie / Richards / Joel / Coull / Mckimmie / Panton / McGregor
Ireland and Scotland - Casey / McDade / Phillips / McCandle / Dinely / Comaskey + various spellings

Well, the old myth about twins skipping a generation is spot on in my family.
I have twin girls, my mother was one of twin sisters and my great grandmother was one of twin sisters none of them identical - if fact always the complete opposite of one another in colouring/personality etc.
No twins at all on the paternal side, all on the maternal side.

Does left-handedness run in the families with the twins? When my mother was enrolling my big brother to start primary school, she remarked that he was left-handed. In a reply to that, the infant-mistress asked if there were twins in the family (to which the answer was "no").
My brother is left-handed. My maternal grandmother was left-handed. I have no idea if anyone two generations earlier was left-handed.
Just curious,

Hi
Have to agree with Scott. My sisters are non-identical twins and when I was pregnant with my daughter (who is 16 tomorrow !!!) my doctor explained exactly the same thing to me. Passes down the maternal line only.
