Haven't had any new leads for this family for some time, so looking for some ideas!
William McAlpine was married to Mary Ferries both were born Ireland I think.
Their son William John McAlpine (abt 1839 – 1883) married Unity Ferrie in 1861 in Newcastle (listed as McCappin) and they are in Scotland census 1881. Unity is listed in 1871 in Holytown as married, but no William.
In the 1871 census, there is another William J McAppin – age 14 – living with the sister of the William John born 1839 – Helena McAlpine, who married John Clint. He is listed as a lodger. This William John married in 1875 and on both this certificate and his death certificate his parents names are William McAlpine and Mary Ferries!
So, I have 2 potential William John McAlpines, both with same parents names – one born about 1839 and the other about 1857 – both Ireland from the census returns. Is it feasible that they are brothers? Is the younger one the son of a sibling of the first?
Where is the William John born 1839 in the 1871 census?
Going back to William McAlpine married to Mary Ferries – I have William’s death in Bothwell in 1883, where he is noted as a widower. I think Mary died after 1867 – she is not noted as deceased at the time of Helena’s marriage in that year. If she is indeed the mother of the William John born 1857, then she is noted as deceased at the time of his marriage in 1875. I haven’t found a death cert for her anywhere.
I think I may have William in 1881 lodging with the Connor family in Shotts, but no definites.
Any help/suggestions gratefully received!
Marie

Maybe you've seen this but -
In 1861 William born 1839 is living with a Charles Farrier and wife.
I think this could be him in 1881 in the same household as William's daughter -

Annette - thank you for making the link with the Connor family and William McAlpine.
Yes, Agnes (also listed as Ann and Nancy) is William's daughter! When I look back at my census record for 1871 for John and Helena Clint (nee McAlpine) - there are Hugh and "Nancy" Connor living with them!
Thanks to your lead and looking at the birth certs for Richard and James Connor, I now know that Agnes McAlpine and Hugh Connor were married in Newtonards County Down - in either 1861 or 1863 - different dates on each birth certificate. Gives me some info now to look at possible Irish records.
Yes, the 1861 census record with Charles Farrier is also correct. William b 1839 married Unity Ferrier/Farrier, sister of Charles. The 1881 census record you mention is Unity and Charles' mother Catherine as Head - and the Elizabeth with her is definitely William's daughter.
So who is the William J McAppin in the 1871 census with the Clint and Connor families? His marriage and death certs list his parents as William McAlpine and Mary Ferries - so he could be the brother of Agnes and Helena - but there already is their brother William John born abt 1839!
No records of William McAlpine and wife Mary Ferries in Scotland - until William appears in 1881 census and death record in 1883.
Can't find any further record of the Clints after the 1881 census.
