Hi Jean
Can you clarify the name there please, Jean?
Jamima (John Ann) Rafferty she married a Millar ?
Her name is Jamima/Jemima? She has turned up as John Ann? Joanne perhaps?
I have been unable to locate them.

Not sure where you have looked - IGI? SP?
Any sign of them in the 1891 census? Any known children (names, dates?) to help us out?
Any further info you can give should help us to help you. :D

Best wishes
Lesley

This is about as close as I can get without any further details....

1887 MURRAY ANTHONY RAFFERTY JANE ANN ST NICHOLAS ABERDEEN CITY/ABERDEEN 168/01 0233

Any chance it was MURRAY and not MILLAR or Jane Ann?

Best wishes
Jean

Hi all,
I find Jamima Rafferty in 1881 in Aberdeen St Nicholas with her parents. She was born in Peterhead abt 1866.

In 1871 she is called John Ann in the census

In 1891 and 1901 William Millar, born abt 1883, is living with his grandmother Margaret Rafferty in Aberdeen St Nicholas. No sign of his parents.

Do you know for sure that a marriage took place? If so, have you looked for a death of Jamima before 1891? Or could William be illegitimate and his grandmother is bringing him up?

Regards,
Sarah

P.S. I haven't looked at them, but I see there are several possible William Mill?rs born in Aberdeen St Nicholas at the right time, and also one William Rafferty...!

Hi Jean,

I take it that John Ann is Ancestry's transcription. ScotlandsPeople have her indexed as Jane Ann. On looking at the census page, it is not clear, but Ancestry's h in John will be the descender of the g in her mother's name Margaret in the line above. Jane Ann is probably correct. If you have bought the census page image on SP, then it would be worth completing a contact form on SP asking for a new copy of the census page, telling them that the online image is not clear.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Jean,

The William Millar that Sarah found above is probably the child registered as William Rafferty, illegitimate son of Jane Ann in 1883 in Aberdeen. There is a paternity RCE naming the father with surname Millar. So the question is, did they subsequently marry? There is no obvious sign of such a marriage.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi all,
I think the marriage JustJean found is indeed Jean's Jamima/Jane Ann. In the 1891 census she is living in Aberdeen St Nicholas with her husband Anthony and two children ages 4 and 2, and is born in Peterhead around the right time to be the one found in 1871 and 1881. Anthony must not have wanted to take on the child of another man, so her mother took care of him.

Jane Ann Murray, other surname Rafferty, died in Aberdeen in 1935.

Regards,
Sarah
