McLeod and or Marshall in Greenock area 1891>
Hi folks, we are trying to make contact with any McLeod or Marshall families living in the Greenock area. We have been following a McLeod family , originally from Skye (1860's to Greenock 1880's) off the chart in 1901??
Thanks more later Peter in Montreal

Hi Peter welcome to
Are you looking to connect with descendants of the McLeod/Marshall families
or are you looking to find where they went to after you lost track? Or maybe both?
Did you find them in the 1901 Census or is that where they fell off the radar?
Searching the records especially with a Mac/M/Mc surname means that wildcards are essential when trying to track them.M**Leod or even M****eod. The boring repetition bit but remember spellings of names was not at all standardised until well into the 20th Century. Then if they were Gaelic speakers too you add another complication to the mix-the 1901 census recorded such info as this.
Tell us what you know & what you are looking for& hopefully we can help in your quest.

McLeod and or Marshall in Greenock area 1891>
Joette, you came back so fast, I was unprepared. Thanks for your initial contact. I will get back to you. I believe that my preference would be to make contact with both families, where ever they may be now. I will return with ' how we got to this point' later. Thanks again. If I were to visit Greenock I would initially grab a phone book, and start dialing numbers. more later peter

From 1901 Bootle(Liverpool area) census, we have identified our G'ma as Sarah Hodgson ( nee McLeod, b.Scotland, probably between apr 1, 1870 - mar 31, 1871) This information produced only one Sarah McLeod, b. Bracadale (Skye) to a John McLeod (shoe maker) & Margaret (nee McIntosh.) -16 aug 1870. Young Sarah (3 mos )is listed as 1 of 4 children appearing on the 1871 Bracadale census.
The family relocated to Greenock- 1881 census John McLeod (shoemaker), Greenock middle (Sarah is now 10).
1891 census, John McLeod (shoemaker) listed as living 29 Dempster, Greenock East / West?. But No Sarah.
We have a record of marriage for Sarah McLeod to a Hamilton Marshall (27 feb 1871, East Greenock). On 1891 Greenock East census - Sarah is listed, as married to Hamilton Marshall , 13 Ingleston St., Greenock east.
1893 We have a record of birth, 13 feb, a daughter, Margaret Marshall.
1901 Greenock east census has Hamilton Marshall and eight year old daughter Margaret, still living at 13 Ingleston. But no Sarah?
We do not know if we have been following the wrong family?, or what happened between 1893 and 1901.
The 1901 Bootle census has OUR G'MA Sarah married?? to Edward George Hodgson, complete with an eight month old daughter, Margaret Elizabeth, (Our Mom, Sarah b. 1905, ).
Ideally we could hook up with either a McLeod or a Marshall descendent still living in the Greenock area, and who has an interest in genealogy.
Lesley duly noted:who knows, maybe someone will note and contact

Hi Peter
Not that this helps your plight a whole lot but just for the record Hamilton and Sarah had another baby in 1895 which died age 11 mos.
Her birth:
1895 MARSHALL LAVINA F GREENOCK EAST /RENFREW 564/01 0438
and her death:
1896 MARSHALL LAVINA F 0 GREENOCK WEST /RENFREW 564/02 0173
her father Hamilton was informant for both records but her death did not occur at Ingelston Street even though that is the address Hamilton states is his address. Not sure if I'm trying to read something in to that fact!!!
Oddly enough I'm not finding a death for Hamilton or Margaret in Scotland nor a marriage. The Marshall family pretty much stayed right in Greenock as nearly as I can tell. Hamilton's mother died there and it looks like his brohter John might have been informant for that event.
If I find somthing else of importance I'll be back!
Best wishes
Jean

Hello Peter,
The Watt Library BMD Indexes may be worth a look (I can’t get it to work for me) http://www.inverclyde.gov.uk/GeneralR.a ... catid=1403
On the 1901 Census does Hamilton Marshall have a marital status?
Alan

Hi Alan
Matter of fact Hamilton is listed as "Mar" on the 1901....and Margaret is listed as a Dau to the head which is actually Hamilton's father William. Then there is Rose wife to William. Hamilton is named as a son along with his brother John and then there is a sister Lavena in the household too. I wonder if this might mean that Margaret was raised by her grandparents....or if it might mean that the enumerator simply omitted the fact she was really a granddaughter. If we could nail down Hamilton or Margaret after 1901 it would be a huge help!!
Best wishes

Hello Jean,
No luck with this at all. There’s a Hamilton Marshall trip from Glasgow to Canada in 1906 but birth year is 1887. http://www.ancestorsonboard.com/
And for a bit of unhelpful trivia; the author of “Nursery Verses” in 1910 was a Hamilton Marshall, who from a brief review in the Scotsman appeared to be from Glasgow and admitted to being a grandfather. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nursery-Verses- ... B0014MB10Q
All the best,
Alan
