looking for Gillooly's
My first time on this so here goes. Anyone got Gillooly in their family? From Meadowhead near Plains, Airdrie also Ireland.

Thanks for your reply. I've got as far as the 1891 census that shows my g.granda being (Patrick Gillooly) age 55 and born in Ireland which would give him a birth year of approx 1836. It is an unusual name but they are a fairly large family. I found out today that someone else found the origins of the name in Spain so who knows where it will all take me. I will keep going though. Don't know how to get Irish info without going over or paying someone to hunt for me. Any pointers will be gratefully received.

Hope some of them may be of some use, but you are right that it is not as straightforward as Scots research, though things are improving rapidly for Irish data...new items turning up all the time.

Hi Hazy,
In 1891 was any of his children with him on the census?
If so what are their birthplaces?
That can help pin down a time when the family moved to Scotland, and if any of them were born in Scotland after 1855, the place and date of the parent's marriage should be shown, that will help further.

My g.g. grandmothers niece married a John Gilhooly in 1871 in Dumfries. I believe that John originally came from Roscommon in Ireland and that his parents were Patrick Gilhooly and Catherine McManus. John and his wife Georgina Neisham moved to Glasgow between 1881 and 1891. They have 12 children which I have found so far.
